Deako
Paul, Go for a twenty, the 410 is okay for introducing your lad to the gun,but you have to be an excellent shot to use one well.I am okay with my 20 but when I recently used my 410 on clays,I hit 2 ex 25!The last thing you want is to discourage him and the 410 leaves no margin for error. Deako
A fair point William, however one can use the excellent sub sonic 20 bore cartridges supplied by North Wales shooting school, and these are super soft;my six year old has killed many a tin can with no problem. The 28 is good, but difficult to get a decent second hand one,the ammo is pricey as well.I suppose you pays your money and takes your choice... tim
if you use 23/24 g loads in a 20 bore the recoil will be less , 28g is a 12 bore load and so will the recoil will be the same . what about a semi no recoil light weight and only one barrel to worry about plus they are cheap! mikec
I take my grandson out decoying with me when there are plenty of pigeons about so there are plenty of shooting to keep him happy, he use the 12 bore semi-auto the only trouble is the lenght. I use 1 og loads and he happy with the small amount of recoil mike
Hoppy
Right this may be a bit long winded but stick with it i will make my point: Most of you will have seen old boys on the river bank with a 3 foot rod out of one of those sets that cost about £15. They are ****, for a few extra quid you can get a 12 ft rod and a semi decent reel they then have a half decent chance of catching something. I have used this analagy with my step daughter shes 12 and she got very dispondent with not hitting a lot with a 20 bore and 410, so i let her try a 12 firing 24g 7 shot cartridges. Results straight away. I have just swopped from a 12 bore to a 20 and its either hit or miss and to start of with its miss miss miss. If your old boy can handle the weight, and lets face it we arnt talking much difference these days, of the 12 get him one, they swing a lot easier than the 20, with the 20 you have to keep pushing the gun on but with the 12 it does a fair amount of the work for you. And to all of those that say 24g isnt heavy enough for pigeons my friend who shoots regularly with me uses this load to great effect. Kev
I’ve got to agree with you Hoppy. I took my 12 year old daughter for a clay lesson just after Christmas. She used a semi auto 12 bore with 24 grm No8. She hit her first five out of five clays. Was I gob smaked? They did however recommend a twenty bore as the 12 was a little to heavy and she struggled with the weight after a while.
