sandersj89
I am thinking about scopes for my intended .243 and I am drawn to the Schmidt and Bender 8*56. Is there much difference between the hungarian and german models, is the approx £140 more cost for the german worth it? Shooting will be mainly fox with lamps and some stalking. Thanks Jerry
Baldrick
Jerry, there's no functional difference between the two. Both are made with the same components and therefore offer the same (stellar) performance, but one is made with cheap Hungarian labour. The German versions hold their value better though. Have you decided on the make of rifle you're after?

Have you decided on the make of rifle you're after? Thanks, I was guessing as much so I might well stick to the hungarian version. Have to look through one in poor light to finally decide but can do that as the local shop are in the country and they will let me take a lamp along and use the scope to see how it is. Not decided finally on the rifle yet though I have discounted Howa now. So far I have only picked up and handled the Howa and a Tikka T3. Still want to get my hands on the Remington and the Browning but so far T3 is the fav. Paper work for the ticket variation is just about done and it will be in the post before the end of the week. Mungler
Jerry I have two S&B 8x56 (one a 1" and one the 30mm) and there's no difference between the two.

Are they german or hungary made and how do you rate them under poor light conditions or under a filtered lamp? Also how do you find the eye relief? Thanks Jerry (Nice to get a personal view)
duey
I have a S&B 8x56 Hungarian that started life on my stalking rifle that was excellent low light useage is great. it now resides on my .22 bruno rimfire as i have changed my stalking rifle to a variable leupold for the option of higher power for the longer shots should they be required

Mungler
Jerry I am still scratching my head on what to do on "scopage" generally. In addition to the two S&B's I have, LV kindly brought me back a Zeiss Conquest 4.5 - 14 x 50 MC Target from Bass pro in the States. I was thinking about putting this on the .223 but I have really fallen in love with S&B (they suck light in like nothing else and the eye relief is magic). For a .243, unless you have really good eyes or won't be shooting anything beyond 200 yards ever then you might want a bit more magnification. I don't know what you are planning - being realistic most of us won't be doing any "Tommy Trucker" 300 yard plus shooting and frankly I **** my pants at anything beyond 100 yards because the farm I shoot is near the M25, roads and people. I suspect that I will bump the 30 mm S&B onto the .22 and flog the 1" S&B and the Zeiss to fund an F-off S&B purchase. If you will wear guaranteed next day delivery postage you can have a play with any of them - I am only using one scope at present. Maybe Cupramann could properly review and write up the 2 S&Bs and settle the debate once and for all?
Dunkield
We need to set up a 1" versus 30mm low light scope test as Mung says, could be interesting - I know Ive would like to hear the results Could be one for after the pub at PW Bisley 2008 As already stated there is no difference between Hungarian/German, in fact the problem with the German's is if/when you come to flog it, all people say is "I could get a new Hungarian for that!" Obviously I haven't looked through all scopes, but I have never looked through any scope that pulls in more light than 8x56 S&B.

I cant see me shooting much over 150 yards on a day to day basis, especially for fox at home on the famr as we are nice and hilly so I can sit up on the brow and cover the valley either side if I wish. Like you I have a big road not far away from my ground in Surry....the runway at Gatwick Airport. Bit further away than yours but still close enough to make you think! Very kind offer as well, but I should be OK, KWG at Handcross have them both in stock and offered me a chance to go look through them in the dark and light so no need to risk your scopes in the post.... The more I hear the more I like the sound of them....
