I want a Mini Breather system for short pool dives and spear fishing, and a propper BCD setup and bottle for underwater photography and exploration, and generally fooling about If you guys do a dive sometime it would be great to tag along and watch, see if I can learn a few things. Im in college untill July when I finish Uniformed Services, but meanwhile, I will do the PADI and have the certificate ready for summer. Lancs Lad
Oh and yes................ I also spear fish...... When I go down to cornwall I take the snorkle gear and spear gun. Its not sporting to spear fish with scuba gear. There are a number of great bass marks off the coast and you also have a chance of a number of other species too..... Plus spider crab............. Hunter
I agree its not that sporting. Il also get a snorkel set as I need it for training anyway. I looked up the stealth mask and found one shop selling them for £18 instead of £40 Looks like a good bit of kit. My friend and brother in Aussie have tried spearfishing, it sounds like such an interesting sport. But out there its warmer clearer waters too. Ah well, we make do with what we have. sjk88
Lancs Lad, I would be interested in giving spear fishing a try sometime. I was just wondering if there are any laws surrounding how many fish/spider crabs you can take and the sizes of them?? As for equipment, what thickness wetsuit do you wearwhilst spearfishing using snorkelling gear?? Thanks sjk Edited January 29, 2008 by sjk88
kdubya
Northern Diver Semi Dry suit (6mm + 6mm! want to dive in english waters? then forget it no such thing as a semi dry suit its a permantly wet suit that dont flush so easy? ie its still bloody wet?which means cold and miserable, unless your harris is just under the surface in summer, if you want to dive invest in a drysuit straight off you will only spend dosh twice if you get into diving properly, I use a dui 200 series suit bought about 20 years ago at a dive show in blackpool, ( bit tight now but into I can still get) its had a new neck seal and thats it and its had more dives than I can remember by cheap by twice, liked the bit about "me mate blew his ears" cant beat quality training eh? BSAC is the way simple as shame they ever ditched the old A tests cheers KW
Hunter
What causes blown ears? rising or lowering to fast? cant be a good thing to get
taz24
What causes blown ears? rising or lowering to fast? cant be a good thing to get Both descending and ascending can rupture your ear drums. The ear drum is connected to the back of the throat by a small tube. If that blocks for any reason and the pressure you are in changes (if you go up or if you go down) then your ear drum will rupture. If it is not the same pressure because of a blockage in the small tube then the difference in pressure can rupture the ear drum. It does not take much even big waves can be felt on he ears. A bet you wished you never asked? taz
Hunter
Cheers for answering. I geuss its just part of the risk of scuba diving. I was shown how to equalise the preusse in the ears, but I had no idea that they you blowout because of the pressure.

True about what you say about semi dry..................its like saying you have half a hard on......just at the time I coudlnt afford a raft of cash to get the dry suit............. And anyway........Im hard me......................and thick............. SJK - size - its all about being sporting - stick to the normal rod and line rules and you should be ok...Likewise dont go killing everything in sight - that will be seriously frowned upon.... there are a few spear fishing web sites - do a quick search and that should give you a bit of the info. Crabs, likewise keep within the normal catch and release sizes. Spider crab isnt eaten here in the UK but is exported over the continent. Hunter
Sussex Scuba are brill! Very helpful people, and a great shop in East Grinstead (PM me for details). Got me booked in for my Discover PADI day, and I have begun going through the PADI Open Water training pack which they supplied. Their shop is full of all the kit wetsuits, BCD's, tanks etc! I look forward to it. They were very positive about their Scuba club, which is what I need, as I have started to feel a bit down in some of my other clubs. So this will be a refreshing new sport for me to learn. I should really be doing DSC 1 training but I cant do everything at once Its a shame you need a licence to do anything these days, but when it comes to dangerou sports, you cant beat good training. mr_colt
Spearfishing seems legal, but after reading some topics about it on a forum, it seems 99% of the UK scuba divers treat every fish as a pet! Most fortunatly I occupy the other 1%. I have met plenty of scuba divers who could be considered anti's though. One nasty fellow chief among them apart from being an anti to hunting etc: He had firearms and other offences on his sheet for tresspassing onto MOD land, ambushing and assualting a lone cadet in the field and taking his issued rifle after he had overpowered the poor sod. Also boasted to me that he had a DIY-job re-activated AK "at a mates house" in case "the police were watching me again." The guy really gave me the creeps to say the least and I was glad when he stopped coming to the club. But I would say a large number of the divers there were PETA-style "animal lovers." I use the term loosely given PETA's shining reputation. So I couldnt really say much about my other hobbies whilst there incase it got the wrong attention. mr_colt. Hunter
Crikey thats some offence. He should be behind bars Im glad I found this out before asking divers in person about spearfishing. Luckily the Sussex Scuba guys running my course, are also hunters/target shooters. So we should have plenty t talk about. The first visit ended up in 70% of the chat about guns and 30% about diving  But for the love of my hide, I wont mention spears or anything remotly pointy and dagerous to animals at the scuba club/training center, untill I know what people are like there. Afterall I can always hunt if I feel the need, and keep Scuba just for diving. I have started studying the manuals today, so begins the stages of training to be a diver Learnt a lot already about Air, regulators, etc. Really interesting I find
