SAVAGE HMR
I think considering you can kill a fox with a head shot from a F.A.C. air rifle at that distance you were perfectly within your rights to shoot at it with a No.6 Very few people would ever admit that they have taken shots they were wary of and fewer people would admit that they have unintentionally wounded an animal they had shot. I've taken shots I wasn't sure about and I've wounded animals that I've later had to chase down and dispatch. I say you did right to take your shot, plus I don't think it would have suffered. The hundred yards it go was more than likely on adrenalin and instinct to escape. The majority of people here would do the same thing as you not that I would expect any of them to admit it. After all everyone needs a pedestal to preach from. Good job bignoel, I'll look forward to your next post.

Guest rabgoat
I shot a fox years ago with the SG,i was walking up the railway lines,i looked up and a fox was walking straight for me couldn't believe my luck,it was the mangyest looking thing i ever have seen, not a hair on it, i stopped and just waited i knew it was going to spot me some time, when it did it was about 50 esh yds away,i let rip with the two barrels no 6's,didn't kill it, i run down and rite enough i had a couple of heavier carts in my belt no 3's,could see the fox at the top of the embankment about 15yds away, and blew it into the field,it was dead now all rite,,most of us im sure would just take the shot with what ever we have in the gun at the time,,

bignoel
when i kept my own mini gun pack of hounds 22 in all we were always picking up wounded foxes from gun shot wounds injured road accidents and so on .so there is a lot that would not claim to takeing a shot that injured. but claim to be the perfect shot [bull ] no one is perfect,
al4x
not to argue but 65 yards with 6's is pretty silly, but was it really 65 yards or could it have been closer? i only ask in that 65 yards does look a long way away with a 12 bore and I can safely say i'd not shoot at a rabbit and expect to kill it at that range let alone a fox. I know the pressure we can be under to shoot them from keepers and farmers but once shot at they are far harder to get the second time. I've no problem with using 6's for fox in the course of shooting other things but 30 yards is the max really effective killing range of them. Even BB's are only effective at max 50 yards
Vegeta
Some good points on this thread. We all take shots we wish we could have back or chances present themselves and we wish we had different loads in. One dead fox, happy farmer and bignoel will be carrying heavier loads (not that a fox would wait around for the carts to be changed mind)

I know I find yardage difficult to judge as the circumstances and quarry vary but I generally get a good feel when looking down the gun of whether the shot is on or not - you obviously felt it was on and took the shot, most would. Lucky or not it's a dead fox which can only be a good thing. WGD
bignoel
it was a guessed yardage as my pace's are shorter than most . a heavier shot next time as quoted if i get a chance to change it in time and a yard rule i guess ? along with all my other equipment i have to carry and a bigger truck.
