greylag70
Following a lovely trip this weekend to a local farm something occured to me. How can you tell the sex of a pigeon. After my daft dog crunched a winged one, forcing it's guts out I pulled the rest out and found an egg ! It is the only way I know it was female. Any other ways ? Fisherman Mike
Both sexes are of an identical size and plumage Greylag so there is no easy way to tell either in flight or at rest. The male only makes the distinctive cooing call and the display flight which is a undulating flight where the bird climbs steeply with clapping wings and then folds wings momentarily before dropping down and climbing again. Some school of thought say that the male is slightly bigger and has a more furnished plumage but I have studied these birds up close for many years and I have not found this to be the case. All I can say is that the male birds have a way to tell and no one knows what that is! FM.

jimdfish
If you feel the chest you will find if female, two little bumps. These are used to attract males as well as to feed milk to their young. There is also a pouch on the front of the bird ( woodpigeons also being marsupial, very closely related to the wombat) in which you will normally find under layers of discarded hankies, beakstick and a little compact of rouge to colour up the neck areas. If you still are not sure place a mirror in the field and females wil instinctively stop and look at themselves. Have you ever known a bird who could resist? jimDfish
