From the BBC news, 1st march 1998;

The Home Office Minister Alun Michael said: "We have now held a successful firearms surrender ... which I believe has put a firm brake on the development of a dangerous gun culture in the UK.

"Today's deadline for surrender of small calibre pistols completes the government's drive to take all handguns out of general civilian circulation."

No point in stating the obvious, but anybody care to comment........?

What there are no more guns out there?:blush: .

I thought the government had done the opposite.

People in the know do not need to look hard to find

a handgun and I would bet that there are more handguns

in the UK now than what there were 10 years ago.

Like most politicians...a lot of hot air and no substance! and still the ***** don't see the picture.

I hear that North or is it South (one of them anyway) Wales police have just been condemned in a report by their own people for totally failing to keep any meaningful records of guns that have been handed in and supposedly destroyed. Wonder how many of those found their way back onto the streets? As usual your average plod shouldn't be let loose near anything remotely connected with firearms.

This must have been the most blatant example of any government in British history, not being in the real world.

Obviously, all of us with legal pistols were out robbing people and performing bank blags every day, I can't remember the percentage of crimes that were committed with legally held guns at the time, around 0.01% was it? And that figure included poaching, armed trespass, rifles, shotguns, no certificate, etc. you name it.

If you remember bob ,we were running up to a general election when all the hype about banning guns was a political chestnut .The tories were in power at the time and decided to ban handguns as a knee jerk action to gain votes .It was the tory party that actually banned hand guns , under pressure from the labour party ,who said that they would ban hand guns if they were elected .

This was the worst piece of legislation ever to come out of the commons in many ayear . A compleat attack on the most law abiding section of the community in this country . I will never be able to forgive politictions on both sides of the house for this abuse of human rights in this country . Yes and we all know the results of banning law abiding citizins from owing a handgun . Harnser .

Yep, without doubt, it won the elction for them. What was our slogan at the time? "If you criminalise hand-guns, only criminals will have hand-guns". Chickens coming home to roost or what?

The only good thing that came out of the handgun ban was the price i got for my guns .I handed in 6 handguns and got more money for them than what i paid for them . Also the price for ammo .It soon became apparent that you would get more for loaded ammo than you would for empty cases and heads ect .So every body loaded all their empty cases to the limit of their legal holding . And then bought a lot more cases because you could get more for them than what you paid for them . Harnser .

Yep, that was fun, some even went to the trouble of using sand instead of powder! Ex military, fired, berdan primed 9mm was picked up on the ranges and bullets put in without even bothering about the primers. It seemed to be a contest as to who could pull the biggest scam! Of course I did not do any of this personally. (honest)

Can you remember what the whole scheme cost the goverment? I can't, but it was around 100 times the estimate, if I remember correctly.

I dont think any body knows how much it cost as the government was reluctant to publish any figures .It must have cost millions . I can remember the government saying that all the guns would be destroyed and not sold on to third world countries so that they could kill each other . Did you see any pictures of these guns being melted down to make pump handles for africa . I hope they didnt sell my ammo off ,it would proberbly have stung somebodys legs being primer powered . harnser

I have £40,000,000 in my head, it was a colossal figure. You mean you actually put primers in yours? I think that it is a safe bet that they were not melted down, sold in the states maybe, most probably to arms dealers.

The cartridges were destroyed, by a firm local to me, they had a huge shredding machine the boxes were tipped into, at the other end lead and brass came out.

bloody loud it was.

:good: Well, maybe, but I can assure you that very few of mine made any noise!
