Dunkield
Digging up an old thread I know, but the article is online now for those who didn't read it, or miss read it http://www.shootingtimes.co.uk/guns/253448...moderators.html
bob300w
Shooting Times conclusion: " With not much between them, the buyer must decide what blend of noise reduction, construction and style suits them and their wallet" Really conclusive tests then? I cannot see for the life of me, how you can test a selection of sound moderators with no sund level meters. If you are not measuring the sound output, what exactly are you testing? I read that article when it came out and reached the conclusion that all shooting mag "tests" were rigged in favour of the product that paid the most in advertising. What's the general consensus for best c/f mod on the Watch?

What's the general consensus for best c/f mod on the Watch? Yep, they also "donate" the test item to the tester, an acquaintance does some gun tests for a shooting mag, and he usually gets to keep the gun that he tests, so really unbiased then? Have you ever seen a bad test report on a gun? How can you get a conclusion on moderators here? It needs all of the available moderators tested on the same day, using the same gun, using sound level meters to measure the sound output at various points, e.g. rear, side, and various angles and ranges in front, which is what Shooting Times should have done. Oddly, they give the precise details of the test equipment including part numbers! http://www.hse.gov.uk/research/hsl_pdf/2004/hsl04-01.pdf

bob300w
Does the test say where the readings were taken from? i.e. the position of the sound level meter in relation to the barrel?
Blackbart
No it doesnt say where the sound meter is in relation to the gun.The testing was carried out in new zealand and it was an average of firing into a sand backstop and firing over an open plain. bob300w
It's surprising to see that there is so little difference in the 223 moderators, only varying by 3.2 decibels, from best to worst. Its also surprising that the unmoderated Stinger (119Db) is not far behind a moderated 223 (123.8).
