allthegearandnoidea
Guys, I have never shot a rifle before and would be interested in taking it up, but have no idea where to start. I just sopke to the NRA at Bisley and have arranged to go down there to speak to them tomorrow about it but wondered if anyone had any ideas on how to start. I briefly spoke to someone I clay shoot with about going out after some of those ginger critters but haven't seem him for a couple of months so that is probably not going to happen (but I can hope). I moving house in a couple of months so getting a permission where I live now is probably going to be too difficult and to short lived and it will probably take quite a while for me to find people where I am moving to that would be able to point me in the right direction so any pointers you have would be appreciated. henry d
Where do you intend to move to ? You never know someone in that area may be willing to take you out with them and who knows what from there ! BTW - Have you shot anything before, shotgun, airrifle ?? allthegearandnoidea
Moving to Reading at the beginning of September. Used to shoot an old air rifle as a kid and clay shoot now (and do some rough shooting when I get the chance but that's not often) Would joining a club be the best option? JohnGalway
Joining a club would be a good solid start I reckon. Get more experience on powder burning rifles, shooting at different ranges under different conditions, no worrying about injuring an animal, getting used to the feel of a particular rifle and it's trigger, sorting out your best shooting position etc. It can be supremely frustrating to jump right into something and not have it go well in the beginning, especially if you're full of enthusiasm in the start. I'm not for one moment saying this would happen, just something you can prepare for  Also if you join a club in the area you intend to live in it'll introduce you to fellow shooters more easily Make friends who might well bring you out as HD says, find out the lie of the land then work on your own permissions. 2shots
Good advice And most clubs have various loan rifles you can use,and Ive never been to one yet where one of the lads will refuse you a try of a rifle you like, its better than trying to do it yourself as you also get years of free advice, and experience.

Well I`m fairly sure that Reading is close to Bisley, certainly close enough for a day trip, especially around the 2nd or 3rd August, when the PW annual meet takes place. If you were to be in the area and be in possession of your own BASC membership card, I`m sure at least one person (me) would be willing to let you have a try. In the mean time have a look for local clubs as the guys above have said and get your eye in
allthegearandnoidea
Cheers for that, I'll get a list of clubs tomorrow when I'm in Bisley and get cracking on finding a local club.
