dunganick
I think you will find its rifle Calibre. This site, although not meant for the UK details alot about most commonly used Cartridges, just relate it to UK Species. http://www.accuratereloading.com/reload.html But broadly speaking (tin hat on): .17 (rimfire and centerfire) Vermin fox at close range (centerfires capable of longer range fox) .20 same as above .22 Same as above, some larger .22 centerfires can be used on deer, tbh i cant remember if the law ever went through that this was legal in uk, it doesnt concern me. It is however legal in scotland as long as the round produced a certain amount of energy. .240 Vermin (overkill quite often) Fox, Small/medium deer Anything above will do the lot. Typical Cartridges Chambered in these Calibres: 17 HMR (rimfire .22lr (rimfire) .204 (centerfire) .222 (centerfire) .223 (centefire) .22-250 (centerfire) .243 (centerfire) 6.5x55 (centerfire) .308 (centerfire) There are hundreds of other cartridges, but these are some of the more popular ones currently. I recommend getting a reloading manual and reading up on the different cartridges and characteristics. If you let us know what you need the Rifle for (vermin/Fox/Deer) then we can help you choose the right round. Bare in mind if your a first time applicant for an FAC you wont be able to get most of the centerfires on the list.

casts_by_fly
game rearer, Search around for the home office guidelines. There are some charts in it around page 70-80 that detail what cartridges are used and appropriate for what game/uses. Beyond that the accurate reloading list posted above is good for specific cartridges and more depth info. Thanks Rick
