Timney trigger kit

Folks,

I ordered a Timney trigger kit and it arrived at my local RFD today so took my weatherby vangaurd 243 in to get the trigger kit on, my RFD removed the standard trigger (4lb pull) and fitted the Timney one ( adjustable down sub 2lb area) the trigger also has a 3 position safety which is handy but on trying to put the action back into the stock the safety moves back about 3mm and the rifle de-cocks so will not work, has anyone ever fitted one of these?

I needed the rifle this weekend so he re-fitted the standard trigger and i need to leave the rifle with him on monday to see if he can figure it out, the timney is supposed to be a "bolt" on trigger kit with no other work required but it just seems to fractionally catch as the action is inserted into the stock, has anyone got any experience with these?

I am having trouble getting consistant groupings with the rifle on targets as it seems i get an ok grouping on some occasions and as much as 4" on others and i figured a trigger kit and moderator may help slightly.

I am also having trouble picking a moderator as it has a strange thread on it.

also can anyone explain how the adjustment and sear (spelling!!) work (prefferably with diagrams!) just for my own benefit.

Thanks,

Garry.

Garry,

I presume the Vanguard is the same as the Howa?

If so they are supposed to be "bolt-on", but they're not!

I didn't fit mine, but I looked at the inletting after it was fitted, and there was quite a bit of stock removed to allow the trigger to function properly.

Maybe part of the trigger that protrudes is still catching somewhere?

Gents,

Thanks for the help, i would've thought he would of figured it out too but i guess not!, now that i know i will give him an ear bashing for not reading the instructions!! i did say i would fit it myself, but was told i would have no come on the rifle so had little choice.

Thanks again

Garry.

Folks,

Just an update, Got the weatherby back today and went out to check the zero and test out the trigger, very impressed! the trigger pull is exactly 2 lbs and i shot about 10 round putting 2 x 2" group with 4 rounds each and hitting centre of a 3" inch circle with the last 2 rounds.

Highly recommended!

And as the instructions said...the stock just needed a little bit shaved out!

Thanks for the replies.....now where's are those foxes........

  • 2 weeks later...

also can anyone explain how the adjustment and sear (spelling!!:/) work (prefferably with diagrams!) just for my own benefit.

Make a fist in both hands - now put them together and press fairly hard.

Now slide one hand one way and the other the opposite way - SLOWLY - until they get to the end of their movement and snap apart. One hand was the sear the other the tumbler (or hammer).

To adjust the amount of 'pull' your hands (or hammer and sear) need to be nearly at the edge ready to snap apart so on your trigger there is a screw that pushhes them to that point just before they snap over the edge (too far and you would be on a knife edge which is unsafe and too little (ie too much overlap) means your trigger will drag for ages before it releases. Of course if you adjust too far the sear and hammer will never meet and never able to overlap and cock again)

The trigger pull is altered by spring pressure - just the same as the amount of force you used to push your fists together - the lighter the pressure the easier it is to pull your hands apart and so the lighter the trigger.

There is also often another adjustment that once the two surfaces have snapped apart stops the movement going further so making the trigger feel like breaking glass - simply because the movement is minimal and no movement after the release. Try a light push with your fists and hold one fist against the chest so there is space between your fists as they snap apart.

Hope that helps

I fitted one to a CZ 452

Inletting required, if you don't take enough wood out it holds the trigger in the fired position but does fit, if you take a bit more wood out the gun works but with a hair trigger, make sure there is plenty of free space around the trigger.
