Maiden22
There's quite a few others on this topic as well. Although some manufacturers claim otherwise, the accepted opinion here seems to be anything over half choke is a big no-no for steel, even if the gun is proofed for steel. Trussman
They would be fine in your modern guns, but I would be wary of using them in your old guns myself

clayman
You can send them in and have them steel proofed - costs about £50 depending on which proof house you use ( their pricings are different, so its worth checking them both out). An RFD would need to send them up and get them back if you cant deliver in person. The London Proof House steel proofs the gun with the chokes you put in it ( if its M/C), so 1/4 and 1/2 are the best choice as you can be confident the cy will be OK. As its cheaper to have a gun lead proofed than it is steel proofed so a lot of importers / manufacturers will lead proof their standard range, but steel proof on demand or hold a small stock at a premium price that are. Its worth checking out if any models you have are currently available in both lead and steel proofs, as the guns are not likely to be manufactured any different for lead or steel. If the model is available in both, you can be pretty confident yours will sail through steel proofing if it was done, and thats probably all the info you'll need to use steel in over 1/2 choke without further worry.
