What size of shot for hares

Recommended Posts

are you using ballistic tips or hollow points? HMR is plenty of gun at that range for hares but like anything the shot needs to go in the right place, the BT's give you more margin for error than most.

It was the Hornady ballistic 17 grn bullet. I was amazed he survived it, but he had. It was about 5mm below the eye and 10 mm to the rear. He wasn't going anywhere or moving much, but he was aware of me when I came up to him.

I'm really regretful of my careless identification. There are loads of hares on another of my shoots and in three years I've never shot at one of them. This one was right where I expected the rabbits, not that this is an excuse like. If he'd stood up or moved or not been crouching, I'd have known in a second, but I'm the one at fault - no question.

I also dont shoot hares by choice, they are getting a bit to thin on the ground. In my youth I generally used a 12 bore with 6 shot and still remember the screaming baby one day. If I had to reduce numbers today I would use a small centerfire rifle and head shots.

As stated above, 32 or 36g of 5's will get the job done. We dont have loads round my way so I leave them alone.

Watched a hare which thought I couldnt see it (I love the way they do that, it's priceless) sneak away from me up a track in a load of wheat last february. He was doing ok until he ran into an old cock pheasant coming the other way. The hare was so shocked it did a backflip and the pheasant pooped itself so badly it crashed into the hedge. I had to unload the gun I was laughing so hard!

There was a great pic of a "stealth" hare on here a while back. Fantastic creatures.
