I'm just reading down this post on weather and bags of birds. I got out last Thursday for the first time by myself in years. I was out with a mate a few weeks ago and we shot 49 crows ans a few pigeons. My only pigeon was feral. Last Thursday was the first by myself in years though. What a joy. Calm warm evening, about 4pm. Standing barley and me. I brought lots of pigeons into the trees above the hide. They sat billing and cooing with me underneath. Too fast for me when coming in but I got a score line going around 6 pm. 2 woodies and 6 crows but the best craic was looking over calm fields in Co. Antrim waiting for the fun to begin.

Nagantino, was down the motorway and noticed a lot of fields around your direction between Moira and Lisburn, should be plenty of pigeons around there I would think.

Lots of flattened areas too :stupid:

Although would think the majority of it would be harvested, getting late in the year

Was out last Friday in a field that has produced good bags the last 3 years, for a couple of hours and was bitterly disappointed.

Whatever the farmer has doe this time there is hardly any food in the field left for the birds. Its like the farmer used a hoover to get the last of the grain :hmm: Still have got a new permission 100 acres of wheat, the first time the farmer has put wheat in his farm, so don't know what they will be like.

  • 3 weeks later...

got out on saturday, was a bit late 3.30 set up in a field where ther were 100+ crows feeding with the same number of pigeons in the next field. Set up a few decoys and sat and waited. 45 mins later got my first, a grey crow, nothing for another 20 mins then a magpie. Its relations were concerned about it and sat in the trees calling for it, just close enough to get it. Then got a ferral pigeon, followed shortly by a crow, then one final magpipe.

So not exactly what i expected to get, but hope to be out next saturday early this time. btw the weather was extremely warm with a bit of a breeze.

I got out on Saturday myself. Great weather, you dont often get to say that, and a great field of cut barley. I had kept an eye on this field and got permission with no probs and was ready Saturday morning. I left it late though and was not set up untill 9.30 or so. I kept the hide small but just left of a huge Oak tree. I find that if I am under the tree I cant make as many shots. The birds were steady but I missed many sitters. BUT, I hit my first left and a right. A magpie and a big grey crow. But were shot on instinct and both clean kills. I got 2 magpies , my first ever and 12 crows. The missed birds were a real frustration. The new gun is a Lanber sporter and this brings me to my question. Do you blot the bird out on these occasions or should you always see the bird?

I shoot DTL and regularly hit max 75 or 60 depending on the shoot but these ******* defeat me. Any advice?
