PUSC
went out last night with a mate for a bit of lamping and had an odd thing happen... he shot a rabbit in the head from what i can only say was 25yards or less. it did a back flip then went scatty ran in zig zags back and forth and legged it off. never seen this happen before and then all of 10minutes later it happened again on another one.... ive never been able to stop a rabbit with 4.51 grain .177 air arms pellets and i always thought that it was down to my bad shooting but last night took the mick. other than bisley magnums which i use in my .22 springer who would reccomend a pellet with a bit more whack to take these rabbits as he was wittering on about hollow points being the best thing to use, which is contrary to my own experience with some frankly pathetic napier power hunters. any advice is appreciated thx. PUSC
arent acupels smaller than air arms? also whyd it run off when it had done the backflip ne1 know?
deejay
arent acupels smaller than air arms? also whyd it run off when it had done the backflip ne1 know? this you will probably find happens often with .177 as the pellets are smaller, travel faster , they tend to do less damage on entry and exit ,it may be worth ivesting in some hevier pellets that suite the gun, my dad uses bisley magnums with his AAS400 .177 which seem to do the job,but also the hollow points should also work just as well mut may not have the accuracy at those distances . Easy Bully
I have been using AA field in .177 for some time now and don't have problem with knocking bunnies over. Shot placement is key. EB
Salop Matt
Ditto here, AA S410 in .177 using the domed head by AA and never had this issue, may be worth cheking the output incase the issue is there !
airssassin
I also shoot in .177 and have never had this problem. Are you hitting them in the right spot? P.S. I always use domed pellets nowadays. Edited August 26, 2008 by airssassin
airssassin
I forgot to say that I don't find any benefit with using heavy / hollow point pellets over standard weight domed pellets. The only exception is with squirrels where bisley magnums work well as they (sqizzers) are tough as 'ell. Whichever pellet groups best in your rifle will be the one to go for. I shoot a BSA lightening XL and an HW100K (both .177) and find H&N Field and Trophy and Air Arms Field best. I also shoot in .177 and have never had this problem. Are you hitting them in the right spot? P.S. I always use domed pellets nowadays.
Vulcha
Logun Penetrators. Used 'em though my S200, and swear by them now. They're like drills, in and out a rabbits head at 20 yards. Not much gets away now.
monkeyjaimz
Another vote for .177 penetrators, I was dropping rabbits at 50 yrds a couple of days ago with no problems at all. You need to find the pellet that is most accurate in your gun mate, thats the key. Providing your gun is putting out a decent amount (ft/lb's) then as long as you can put the pellet inthe kill zone - thats game over for your quarry.
