del182
HI all,i am applying for both my fac/sgc,but what i need to know is how to go about gaining permissions before i have my license,it would seem to me that farmers would be more inclind to grant permission to someone that already holds a license and has insurance,so how do i go about trying to gain permissions without a license, what would you say when asked if i have a license? Jonty
Hi Del, I'm no expert on FAC but I do know that unless you are in a target club, you would need an approved piece of land (suitable for the type of rifle you want) before your firearms department would grant the FAC so that's pretty much a no brainer I think. As far as your SGC goes, you don't need any permissions/land when applying, just go down to your local clay ground, have a lesson or two and apply. Once you get your SGC, then I would suggest you get some insurance and start knocking on doors. You'll have to be patient and persitant but hopefully it will pay off and you find a permission (ther's stacks of advice on here on how to do it but it all does boil down to you putting in the leg work). Once you've got a permission, and you're proving yourself useful to Mr Farmer and he feels happy with the job you're doing and that you're safe, you could approach him about extending your permission to cover FAC, if he's happy with that, bob's your uncle and stick your application in. I seriously doubt that you'll get anyone agreeing to let you shoot on their land brfore you've got your ticket - if they've a vermin problem they'll want it sorting ASAP not x months down the line. If you started with the shotty it would also give you a good grounding in safe shooting and awareness of the environment you're in prior to moving on to FAC. Hope this helps and good luck. rec-baller
sorry to disagree BUT-- i gained three permissions just using an air rifle, but i explained to all three land owners i was applying for my F.A.C & S.G.C to be used on their land --they were all happy to accept this and allowed me to do pest control with an air rifle till i was lucky and was granted both certs, i now have 7 permissions all passed for firearms use just go and explain to land owners and you may be amazes at what you get--i was !! i talked to on of my farmers and explained about bunnys running into the fields next to his,( they are owned by another farmer ) he said " he,s a grumpy old b**tard who owns the farm, you,ll never get permission from him !! so i did,nt bother till a few weeks later when i thought "sod it--nothing tried nothing gained" and went to speak to the grumpy old ***, i actualy found him to be a realy talkative young farmer and had no problems gaining permission , he even asked me to clear a second field fo rabbits for him so go and try it mate --you never know shaun Edited September 2, 2008 by rec-baller
V8landy
Hi Del I am in the same postion as you, i.e no SGC, but I am off round to all the local farmers this weekend with my DIY calling cards offering my services. I will be getting my photographs for the SGC application form also this weekend, and getting that off ASAP. Like you I also will be wanting soon the FAC, but think it is best to build up confidence from both me and the farmers before getting that. Good luck V8 Edited September 3, 2008 by V8landy
