I am not sure what the legislation on docking terriers tails are can anybody clear it up for me and is there any possibilty of getting a puppys tail docked by a vet at 4 months (i know its a very long shot and probably sounds stupid)

Not a chance - it'd be classed as an amputation.

yes they will do it if you can provide enough evidence that it is going to be a worker and from aline of worker's .my pal just his done.

Not at 4 months old.

All the correct information can be found here... http://www.cdb.org/awa/index.htm

"The exemption for working dogs allows a dog that is likely to perform certain specified types of work to have its tail docked by a veterinary surgeon. The dog will have to be less than 5 days old and the veterinary surgeon will have to certify that he or she has seen specified evidence that the dog is likely to work in specified areas. Puppies being docked must be microchipped, either at the time of docking or when the vet considers they are old enough." CDB

"The exemption allows certain types of working dog to have their tails docked by a veterinary surgeon. The dog has to be no more than 5 days old and the veterinary surgeon must certify that he or she has seen evidence that the dog is likely to work in one of the specified areas" DEFRA

so whats it classed at 4 days old them ??

At four days old it's classed (as long as the guidelines have been met) as a legal prophylactic amputation/docking.

After the dog is less than 5 days old it would be classed as an illegal prophylactic amputation/docking, because docking after the dog is less than 5 days is illegal if done for prophylactic purposes.

The only way a tail can then be docked/amputated is for medical reasons, not for prophylaxis.

I don't want to put words in Piebob's mouth, but I'm sure in his previous posts he was meaning it will be an 'illegal amputation' not a 'legal docking'. However there's little point in arguing over the meaning of words, docking is an amputation in the broadest sense of the word, in that it is the removal of a body part.

The law and the correct answer to the OP's question is all detailed in various posts above.
