Axe
Having now spent quite a bit of time going through the General Licenses and legislation, I seem to have confused myself about the legality of shooting certain animals like Fox or Grey Squirrel for example. What I mean is, I havent come across the right legislation where it is written that we can legally shoot Fox or Grey Squirrel etc. Can anyone direct me to it please? What i'm trying to find is a legally accurate list of what can be shot.
Gully
General Licences are for birds. For mammals see http://www.defra.gov.uk/farm/wildlife/other/index.htm Protected (land) mammals are badgers, bats, otters, wildcats, dormice, hedgehogs, pine martens and polecats. I think that's all of them. You can't shoot dolphins either
Axe
Thanks Gully, what bothers me is that I can't seem tlo find any specific mention of Fox or Grey Squirrel in any of the Acts (that i've read so far) pertaining to the controlling (shooting) of. Bleeh
Deary me! did you never listen in school!. This act, is the bible of all shooters, read it and learn. The Wildlife and Countryside act. 1981
Gully
If its not protected you can shoot it! (providing its on your land etc). So, thinking of mammals not on the protected list (forget birds), you have deer, fox, rabbit, hare, rats, mice, squirrels etc, the sort of stuff people on her post about shooting all day long. Axe
Well this is the whole point, I have gotten myself confused. I know we can but just can't find where it says so. That is why asked for help to find it. I've been through the Act as mentioned but got lost in the words after 20 mins of staring at the screen reading it. Bleeh
Pleh, alright. I'll sum it up. EVERY SINGLE LAST BIRD IN THE UNITED KINGDOM is protected. Yep, it is. There are a few however you can shoot IF YOU HAVE GOOD REASON, this we know as the pest species list. There are a few over birds, that while protected during there laying and rearing season, can be shot outside of it, we know this as game list. Mammals on the over hand, are the opposite. They can shoot everything, minus a few protected ones (red squirrels, otters ect) with good reason. If you really, really want, I can type up the legistation for you. Don`t think so Gully, See Bleeh`s reply above.
Gully
Henry, I don't see how my answer contradicts Bleeh's? I said general licences are for birds and understand all are protected. I've given a list of protected mammals and also those that aren;t.
