blackthorn
cut some good sticks last year still drying, had a problem with this one, it was a off shoot of the main branch, cut with a thought of carving the head of the stick had plans of doing a lab head, then it started to split ended cutting back splits till it stoped, that was june, no more split so ended up with this, a little early Edited October 16, 2008 by blackthorn

adbirdy
I cut a stick of the same type and also had it split quite badly. I spoke to a stick dresser at the game fair and he recommended painting all cut ends of the stick, especially around the handle, as the splits are caused by the wood drying out too quickly and painting prevents this! Hope you find this useful Ade

adbirdy
No Blackthorn, he didn't say it needed to be anything specific as long as it was painted with something and that slowed down the drying out process. Ade
