I believe it is legal but you might find the company you wish to travel with will say no.

 

Personally if it's in a hard case and then in some sort of bag (to disguise it) and in the rack above your head ,I can't see that anyone would know you had one, which I think is the best way to transport in public.

I made a general enquiry about transporting an air rifle on the train from Guildford to Exeter and was told I had to pre-arrange with the train company first, otherwise I couldn’t take it. cant remember which train company it was

 

Might be worth a check, as I thought it would have been the same for a shotgun.
