Vegeta
Hey folks, Just wondering can anyone tell me roughly a few shotgun loads? Say for 28 grams of lead how much powder would one use. I am not reloading or anything just wondering roughly how much powder goes into different shotgun carts, 28 gram, 32, 36 etc etc Thanks
casts_by_fly
vegeta, it depends on a lot of factors including the weight of the shot, the particular hull and wad/cup, the bore diameter you're dealing in, and the powder you choose to use. A 28g (1 oz) load in a 12 gauge will be between 15 and 20 grains of powder. If you bump that up to a 1.25 oz load (about 35 grams) you'll be 25-30 grains. You can search more combinations at hodgdon's website: http://data.hodgdon.com/shotshell_load.asp Thanks, Rick
Vegeta
that's perfect was just looking for a general idea of the order of the powder, grains, grams or ounces Thanks a million
njc110381
That's interesting. How come you use more powder with more shot? I know with rifle ammo it's usually lower for the heavier bullets to keep the pressure down.
deershooter
You NEVER USE MORE POWDER WITH MORE SHOT the powder has to be slower burning then you might ues more ,but never more powder of the same type for more shot you use more powder for less shot ie 21grains of vectan AS for 28grams and 22.5 grains of vectan AS with 24grams buy a good reloading book or disc before giving advise please Deershooter
casts_by_fly
deershooter, Yes, for the same powder and greater shot weight you'd use less powder. However the question was more general, i.e. about how much powder would you expect to find in a 28 g shell vs a 36 g shell. Since most shotgun cartridges are loaded to a velocity for a given charge weight and not a specific powder or pressure, you'll find more powder in a 36 g shell to get the required velocity. Yes, it will be a slower burning powder. Thanks, Rick

Someone tried to tell me that the weight of a cart (28g, 36g etc etc) was the powder measure/weight. I was of the belief it was the shot weight (which you guys have confirmed) so I just wanted to know what weights of powder can be found in your average shotgun cartridges. I did not want reloading info but its better to be safe than sorry so thanks for your input also Veg
