Topgunners
Hi all. I have a question concerning the Night force nxs 3.5-15/50 scope with optilock mounts My shooting partner has one fitted to his tikka 3 stainless light and just recently it has been playing up. After a couple of shots the zero moves 4inches to the left. Upon re-zeroing he has then gone out and dropped foxes at 150-200 yards. Then completely misses one next time out and again upon checking the scope is 3-4 inches out to te left. Now I would expect a drop problem but not a sideways one. Any experts advise what the problem could be. (not good for a £1000 scope). He uses factory loads and home rolled and is very careful about knocks etc to the rifle when in use. Pulling his hair out at the minute( well he would but bald as a coot) Dave K Edited November 30, 2008 by Topgunners
radio1ham
could be the spring inside the scope that holds the rectile in place maybe loose or worse broke doe the scope creep along the mounts or the mounting on the rifle if so has the scope creep pin in the mounts being used (just a thought) or maybe time for a new scope nothing worse when that happens it happened to the scope on my 243 with a slight knock (doesnt take much to upset the scope) so i just put another scope on and ok now
Baldrick
Dismantle the mounts/rings, clean them thoroughly and reassemble carefully. Make sure the bolt securing the Optilock rings to the bases is firm and threadlocked. I'm sure the recoil stud will have been properly seated. Check that any moderator fitted remains fully screwed on during use. A Nightforce should not shift zero unless it's getting rough treatment. Billy.
I spoke to garyb, who said he had a similar problem, then when he changed to a 50 grn bullet, it shoots straight as a, erm, bullet! So do check bullet weights too!
Topgunners
Thanks for your comments, these have been passed on to my mate and he is now going to strip, clean and remount the scope. He also said that he always takes the moderator off and oils it ,when he puts the rifle away and refits it before use. Don't know if that might be an issue. Changed from 50grn to 55grn Will mate My problems were a mix of T8 and bullet.. very strange, but I'd recomend fault finding after remounting the scope, and then perhaps check for the barrel touching the stock and even try without the mod... ? Mine was keyholeing like a ****** - but not all the time

Mine was keyholeing like a ****** - but not all the time I got one of the numbers right I guess...! Just found a nice bit of rust gathering on my 22-250 screw cut (inside the barrel), which will undoubtedly be my next source of issues
william
Thanks for all the advice chaps Dismantle the mounts/rings, clean them thoroughly and reassemble carefully. Check that any moderator fitted remains fully screwed on during use. A Nightforce should not shift zero unless it's getting rough treatment. I did all of the above last night and I have just returned from zero ing at 100 yds it is grouping well sub half inch . The problem just seems to creep up over time I cannot put my finger on it. I know its not my shooting even if the gun is say 4 inches to the left I can still group well I load my own bullets I use 95grn with 42.5 grn of vit n160. I have just zeroed on factory 70grn federals so I will see how they go, I have also slid a sheet of paper around the barrel and down to check the barrel is floated and its fine. So fingers crossed. I am sure sound moderator removal after shooting is ok to do to clean around the crown and add small lick of oil as long as the mod is back on nipped up this should cause any problems do you think.??
