millo2
This story from West Cumbria Online:- A great stalward for Workington Town, Whitehaven and Rugby League in general, but makes your toes curl just reading this story Lewty quits game after injury Published on 25/01/2005 FORMER Workington Town and Haven star Graeme Lewthwaite has had his playing career cut short by a nasty eye injury. Lewty, who is currently player/coach of Cumberland League Lowca ARLFC, suffered a ruptured retina and fractured cheekbone last weekend. The winger came on as a substitute for Lowca against Egremont in the league last Saturday when the damage happened. But he says it has finished his playing career altogether and he will have to continue his love of rugby league from the sidelines. Lewthwaite said: “I had hoped to keep playing but this was just one injury too many. I’m not even sure how it happened. During the game I touched my eye and it fell out, so I had to go to West Cumberland Hospital. I am just going to be coaching from the sidelines from now on.” At the hospital Lewthwaite was told that he would not need surgery of any kind but that it was to be left to heal itself and could take between four and six weeks to do so. “When I got up on Sunday morning and blew my nose, my eye popped out again,” he added. "It was popped back in at the hospital." “I have to rest it and it has just started to open up now, it was completely closed for three days afterwards.” Lewthwaite was especially disappointed as this is his first year in charge of Lowca and they are currently struggling with an injury crisis. “It is very frustrating because we are down to the bare bones at the minute,” he added. webber
My grandad used to play rugby league. I remember him telling me that you could always guarantee two things when you played at Whitehaven. A bloody good scrap, and an even better cup of tea! webber

Wookie
It takes a special kind of Briton to talk about an eye popping out in such a calm way. Reminds me of that bit in Monty Python with the officer losing a leg to the "tiger" Wookie
Fisherman Mike
I broke my Cheekbown in a FA Vase game in 1988. I didnt know it was broken until an xray 3 days later by which time my face had swollen so much it looked as though someone had stuck Andy Fordams bum on the side of my face. It didnt hurt at the time but I got really fed up of Tomato soup!! Our centre forwards career was cut short by a detached retina. He swallowed his tongue in the same collision and went into unconsciousness.. That was really scary.
