Wonderful Afternoon

Arranged to meet NewSportShooter out on our new permission this afternoon, unfortunately he couldn't make it in the end, oh well another day.

I drove up to the farm about 3pm, walked up to the corner of a small square wood which is at the top of a gentle hill with an amazing view over the fields.

Thought i might as well set up some deeks and settle back to watch the flightlines as i wasn't familiar with them on this new farm.

The field was covered in a hard frost, but it wasn't too bad and the decoys could be seen fairly well.

Within the first hour i'd learnt that two flightlines travel up to the woods (on the two sides i could see) and i was pretty much in the middle of them, but

that wasn't really too much of a problem as i was on more of a recon mission anyway.

Pulled a couple of pigeons off their paths and shot them (with two of the best i've ever shot!), then as it was getting dark walked back along the woods towards

where i had parked, to where one of the flightlines were.

Sat on the bank at the treeline without any kind of hide and just watched the sun go down, as it did, couple of pigeons flew straight in front of me,

pulled the gun up, nothing! bloody idiot, had racked the action back (semi-auto) for safety as i was walking with my bag etc, then not slid it forward

again when i sat down.

So all in all, only two pigeons, but a helluva lot of knowledge and a lovely afternoon spent, just wish i'd taken the camera as well.

It's not all about the bag, it's all about the experience.

Sounds blooming perfect to me.

I've had a few of those over the holiday and I'm still learning about how it all works and therefore not worrying about the size of my bags. Sometimes the scenery and fresh air are all you need to recharge your batteries and you nearly always go home feeling better for the experience and with a bit more knowledge in the bag. I've also picked up another permission this week and I'm looking forward to getting to know that over the coming months. I would imagine that today was bloody freezing as the sun dropped away - it was bad enough last Saturday!!

Best of luck on your new permission.

Regards,

Stoaty

Thats right 'rub it it'.

Well I, incidentally, speant a lovely afternoon at Watford General watching a species I can only refer to as 'feral birds', the missus the exception of course. The ammount of times I was asked 'what are you looking at' whilst gazing out of the window at the clear blue sky and big red star settling in towards the horizon. Hay ho, at least we found out that our future family member has his/her father's long legs and small head - so I guess you could say I got a look at something quite special as well......

Anyhooo thats life - hopefully tomorrow will duplicate todays weather and you can fill me in on the flightlines over coffee & cartridge smoke.....
