Wookie
It turns out that I have some time-off carried through from last year and, coupled with my promise to get out shooting more, I was thinking about trading some of it in for a day out mid-week on the clays, possibly a lesson or two as well. Can anyone recommend a ground withing an hour (in a slow car) of Cambridge that I could get to with a good selection of sporting clays? I'm open to a bit of skeet too, but it will be my first time. Cheers, Wookie
Peter De La Mare
http://www.highlodge.co.uk/ http://www.lctc.co.uk/ I think one of those should be close enough for you.
Wookie
Cheers for that Peter. I've been to both of them before and High Lodge is a little too far out of the way. Plus, it's quite close to where my mum lives, so I would be obliged to pop in and vist etc. Lakenheath's possible, but I was thinking of somewhere different that people know is a good layout and very friendly. I found Lakenheath just a little impersonal.
Peter De La Mare
Ok, what about http://fennesclays.co.uk/
Zapp
Or Sporting Targets 20 minutes from where I work just outside Huntingdon, sporting, skeet and DTL. ZB

I wasn't aware of them, I've added it to my favourites list.
Wookie
I hadn't heard of them either. Nice one Zapp. Actually, nice one Pete, I'd not heard of Fennes either. Right, looks like I have a choice of local sites to hit to use up my five days of carry over (before end of March!). Zapp, you fancy a day off on the clays at some point? Sounds like you are only just up the road from me.
MC
Ok, what about http://fennesclays.co.uk/ IMO, I wouldn't bother with them. There isn't that much variation at the moment. I hope it will get better as I was intending them to be my weekly evening haunt through the summer.

I hope it will get better as I was intending them to be my weekly evening haunt through the summer. I've been there quite a few times since they reopened and I quite enjoy it. Though now I am a little bored having slightly over done it, plus it's quite a slap from my house. There are some very testing targets that can definitely improve one's understanding of how to read birds (targets) properly. The 80 yard teal for instance, and a chondel on the same stand that cost me a box or two of cartridges to find out exactly where they were. The teal was fairly easy to hit on the way down, but that's cheating (well, not really) and the pleasure is shooting it on the way up. The tower is also a good training aid. Clays at 25p each is a bit expensive though.
MC
80 yard teal? Are you going to the same Fennes as I am? There is a long range teal on the bottom field but nothing near 80 yards. The only bird I found testing is the high tower. Even the diving fast battue on the low field was easy once you had found it.
Peter De La Mare
According to my buddies range finder, the trap is 81 yards away. It does come towards you, but it rises very fast and steeply indeed and to shoot it on the way up is very hard, until you've found the right spot. Agreed, with the exception of the added mid tower bird it hadn't changed since i went there 2/3 months previous and i wasn't impressed then. Lots of repeated targets stand after stand. There was that one stand with 6 birds coming off it, but you can't hang around that all day. For the extra 15 minutes drive i'd rather go back to high lodge.
