Morning all,

I hope I can help out here.

Woodcock are not game, but are included under the provisions of the 1831 Game Act Section 2, and 30 for example.

What this means is- you could commit the offence of poaching woodcock if you shot them or went after them on land you have no right to be on, but you can shoot them on a Sunday on land you have permission to be on. Same for snipe and rabbits by the way.

Are the "no shooting on Sunday" laws archaic? Should they be repealed? Everything is open on a Sunday these days, even Sainsbury's.

Personally I like it just the way it is, but these laws should be reviewed from time to time.

I too feel the feel these laws should be reviewed. Pain in the neck for wildfowlers I can tell you.

Can shoot in Suffolk on a Sunday but not in norfolk-Bit of a nuisance when you have land that crosses the counties boundaries

Well well you can learn something new all the time. I always thought Woodcock were classed as game from the shooting point of view even though they appear under the heading 'wildfowl' like all/most waders.

Mind you I'd still caution against shooting 'wildfowl' on Sundays in some areas. This is a hangover from the very early days restricting the shooting of wildfowl when it was left to each county (that's COUNTY not country) to decide whether Sunday shooting could or could not be allowed. Norfolk No, Suffolk Yes. Essex well who the hell knows! :good:
