Baldrick
One of the farms I manage has been very late lifting the sugar beet. Only half had been lifted by lunchtime today. However the fields that had been lifted, scattered with beet remnants and leaves, were literally blue with pigeons. The adjoining fields were thick with OSR and winter wheat (although it is admittedly quite forward). Has anyone had any success shooting over harvested beet fields? Highlander
Go for it you know it makes sense! I've found beet works best when frosted, same goes for lifted tatties and carrots so NOW with the colder weather that's forecast I think you'd be on a winner. Whitebridges
Sounds very promising. Another added bonus is you'll have the wind this weekend.
MerseaDavid
I have had good days shooting over harvested beet, especially freshly havested. A frost will also bring the birds in. It is worth having ago at them.
Tim.
We are in a similar situation, only half of our beet is lifted. One of the lads went on the beet tops a few weeks back, didnt have much luck though. The next day I was ploughing the field and it was covered. I can only hope they are eating all of the weed beet seed
MerseaDavid
It does normally take a couple of days before the birds really start to get on to beet. but this time of year it will draw the birds in because they are getting bored of eating rape.
