GJUK
Hello, Today I went out shooting again on a 250 acre permission my friend and I recently acquired. Oh boy what a great day! I set off from home at 8 and got on site for about 8:15, kitted up and made my way to the 'top field' above the farm, where I had not shot before. *insert picture of steep hill with rape* While there, I shot one bird, which I had to 'rescue' from the border hedge of the land I was shooting on, as I had 'winged it'. *insert picture of me in a hedge* Quickly, I then shot another which came in fast and low , saw me, took off, came right around and back in range. A clean kill this time. By this time I had taken 8 shots, and killed 2. It's not very good I know but I’m getting better. Learning not to take shots too quickly, line the birds up etc all comes with practice. I made my way off to the middle are of the farm now, and shot another 1 bird while there, which responded well to the decoys. Now the interesting bit; While down the 'bottom of the farm', I met the local hunt which appeared from nowhere while I was shooting. I heard the trumpets and barking so I unloaded and opened up, turned around to face the hedge and waited. Sure enough, some portly blokes on horseback and hounds appeared! I did what I thought was best in the situation, I had the gun in the obvious "T" safety lock grip and it was open and empty. My ear plugs by this time were out also. I had to wave and shout to make the fat bloke aware of me. This got me thinking, aren't these hunts meant to tell property owners that they're about to use their land for the hunt? You see I was shooting in the hedge, which is at the edge of my permissions land. The hedge row/tree row is about 30 ft deep and I was within the 1st 10 feet or so. Which I assume is okay, legally? The owner seems to think its fine anyway – a grey area? A wonderful day but boy did I feel like a kid in school. I learnt a lot. Very valuable day out. I hope your imagination made up for my lack of photos. Jon

Billy.
You were obviously packing light if you managed to move so easily from one end of the farm to the other...! Most people dread the walk back to the car at the end of the day. My tip is to spend a bit of time watching the flight lines and getting yourself under those and staying there and you'll end up with a much bigger bag. If you've got woodland on your permission, look for the flight lines to and from that, as they all need somewhere to roost. Nice to see you getting out and about and getting your practice in. Just don't forget to take some pictures next time
