Decoying pigeons

Shooting Tom

I was out shooting over my field yesterday, i stand in a barn and use lofted decoys under the tree which i cant see cus of the roof lol. But i only had my old decoys down the field so i put them out in the field and one pigeon decoyed right in and i shot it and it when down, but didnt die so i had to kill it. then had a crow fly over and that two didnt die after being shot, and then birds where close, this then happened on 2 more pigeons and 1 more crow, does any one know why they are not dieing straight off.

Also when using my lofting poles they are only old rubish poles that are not good at all, but once i put them up about 5 or more pigeons land in the tree at different times of which i didnt have a shot at. does any on know other lofting poles that are good?

Thanks.

It might just be that you are not giving the birds enough lead or you may not be on the right line.

If birds are coming into the pattern they are quite often drppoing and some people dont allow for this and quite often shoot over the top of birds.

Or maybe if the cartridges are very cold or slightly damp then they daont fire aswell.

It might just be that you are using to lighter cartridges. I always use 6 shot 32 gram Eley HP pigeons and these work well.

If I was you I would sit under the tree because that is where birds will normally want to go first and you will miss out on more shots.

Dad made our lofting poles, but we did buy a set off ebay but you have to leave them put together up the tree which is no good if you want to put 3 - 4 lofted birds up.

The reasons the birds didn't die immediately they were shot is because you did not hit them hard enough and there are lots of reasons why that might have happened.

Have a few rounds of sporting clays, which will help you judge distance, lead and improve your swing.

Also, ensure your decoys are placed so that they bring the birds within range of your position.

30 yards is a good guide, any birds outside of that area ignore.

If you put lofted decoys in trees, then position your hide so that you can see them, as they will attract birds into the trees for you to shoot.

Your lofting poles seemed to work OK, as they placed the decoys well enough to attract birds, why would you want to change them ?

New poles won't attract more birds than old poles.
