triscrx
A colleague at work has asked me what the situation is regarding cormorants and shooting them if they are a pest. He is a keen fisherman (freshwater) and at his local lake there is a cormorant that is reducing the numbers there quite dramatically. I said I would ask on here to see if anyone else has had or heard of this problem in the past? Would it be possible to shoot it of it was causing that much of a problem? Quist
I was involved in trying to get a license from DEFRA to cull some a few years back. They are extremely reluctant to grant them unless you can prove that you have ehausted all deterrent avenues and are suffering actual financial loss. We never got granted a license. They even wanted photos of fish scarred by the cormorant attacks. I hope you have better luck than we did.

triscrx
Just found this link: http://www.basc.org.uk/content/basc_welcomes_plans_to_im Maybe worth applying by the sounds of what he was telling me this cormorant is quite a problem. They can only say no.
jonevo
There is a fishery I shoot on and I have already had 5 cormorants, they are systematically coming into his stock pool early morning till late afternoon and have eaten approx £12.000 worth of fish. He applied to defra and was successful they permitted the use of control methods incl gun to shoot them, to prevent further loss he said even if defra revoked his application he would kill them as they were making him bankrupt His carp fishery is also let out to a private club who had also complained of the lack of fish being caught. triscrx
Cheers for the advice. I will let my mate know tomorrow when i see him in work. Could be a new permission for me if there is adjacent land, or could lead to something else. Will keep all posted.
CEREALTHRILLER
Sometimes the cormorants disappear around our way - some say it's a form of lead poisoning
deershooter
You just have to prove that you have tried all other ways to deter them ,we have just been granted a Licence to shoot 5 per month on the trout section of our local river . When the DEFRA man came to have a look as soon as he got out of his car 2 cormarants came down and helped themselves to our trout this was just what we needed as then there was no problem getting the licence ,however it is for named guns only not any one who wants to shoot Deershooter

Unless you see the license dont bother.
