Decided last minute to go out for a walk this evening, at about 5pm. At about 5.40 as the sun was just setting, we found a place to sit, where we just listened to the birds as it got darker and darker. At about 6.10 I saw a muntjac walking out of the woods about 200m away from me. I started off walking to it, but then the ground was too wet and noisy where I was (behind cover) so I had to move out into sight of the deer and crawl. I noticed then that a second one had also come out. Unfortunately by this time it was starting to get really dark so after a minute or two crawling I decided that it was too slow, and I went into the crouch position. But as I got closer still, I had to go back to crawling through some longish grass.

By now it was getting very dark, I was starting to doubt that the dark object I thought was a munty was not just a dark bit of grass. So I got up and started to walk slowly towards it. After a few meters he noticed something, and turned broadside on to me, against a background of lighter grass. There was no doubt now, and at about 70m I took the shot standing. There was a huge thump, he shot up in the air, and then took off at full speed towards the woods, where he disappeared with much snapping of twigs.

This caused a bit of a problem, as he had jumped over a 5ft stream, and I couldn't follow him. Also there was only about 5 minutes of light left. I had just decided that the only thing left to do was come back in the morning, when we noticed a little bridge made from a railway sleeper that I had never realised was there, so I crossed over.

And as luck would have it (and I am very grateful), there he was, stone dead, about 10m from the bridge. Turned out later I had shot him through the lungs, just nicking the heart - he managed about 20m before collapsing.

Moral of the story; take a torch, next time I probably won't be so lucky.

PS it's a big one too - biggest I've ever shot anyway
