I fancy gaining my firearms certificate now I'm almost 21

Unfortunately I have no idea what I need to be looking at riflewise..

Quary will be.. Foxes, Rabbits, Crows, Magpies (all with a backstop ofcourse)

I've got plenty of land which belongs to my parents (Dairy Farm) which I'm permitted to shoot on, I'd also like to pop up to minsterley in the future and join the rifle club.

My dads got his SGC & FAC so the cabinet/storage is fit for the requirements.

So.. questions :good:

Which Calibre/s and moderators should I apply for?

With currently having my SGC do I apply for a coterminous certificate or FAC?

EDIT - 3rd question.. heh , Dads got a .22 rifle in the cabinet (with mags and all ammo kept locked in a safe) , can I shoot this without having an FAC provided he's supervising me?

Thanks in advance

You can use a firearm under the supervision of the Landowner, so yes you can shoot under the supervision of your father.

For Fox something like a .223 is good, any you'll want a rimfire for smaller stuff. If your dad already has a .22, why not go for a HMR? Both rifles should be + moderator, you can choose them later.

Thankyou for your reply

I'll force him to take me out on the weekend for a go with his rifle,

Please can you explain the advantage of the HMR over the .22? I'm guessing the HMR is a smaller round?

smaller lighter round but with more punch. It means they shoot a lot flatter and you can shoot a lot further with one than a .22lr. Also the increase in velocity helps cut down on ricochets which are the worst thing about the .22lr

The HMR is a bigger case, smaller bullet. It fires a 17 grain bullet at 2500fps giving you 245ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle

.22lr fires a 40grn bullet (there are others but 40grn is the most common) at around 1000fps. Gives around 100 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle.

Trajectory is a huge difference. With a .22 you have to be very aware of the range so you get a good hit. With the HMR anywhere between the gun and 125 yards you just aim where you want to hit and the bullet will be within an inch high or low at the most. With a .22 you could be 3 inches or more out at the same range!

Take a look here, there's a lot of HMR stuff and also a trajectory comparison with the .22......

I'm going to be zeroing the .22 either tommorow afternoon or the weekend (watched over by my dad ofcourse)

Whats the best range to be going for? I intend on having a pop at some crows and magpies (with a v.good backdrop) , I need to find some bunny roadkill and leave it out for them!!

i would go with the HMR, it will do all the 22 will do and more, i live in shropshire and would gladly give you a go with mine if you wish, let me know with a pm if your interested.

Thanks for the offer that v.kind of you!

I'll be definately sticking the HMR down on the ticket, I've shot with my dads .22 this weekend and can see the HMR being my prefered choice due to the flatter trajectory
