Munty for farmer

Just spoke to a farmer about resuming shooting there now the game season is over. He wants some muntjac dealing with and to take to his butcher.

My shooting partner has a .223 - I think I read somewhere that calibre is ok for munty now?

Whats the most likely time to spot them and how soon after its shot should it be gralloched and skinned?

Thanks in advance.

It’s a common misconception that just because .223 has been allowed for certain species of deer, anyone can just go out and shoot them. This is wrong as you must still have a condition on your ticket which allows deer to be taken. If you haven’t got this condition then you are breaking the law by shooting deer, and are effectively poaching.

Was there not a provision that,if you had fox on your ticket, then to save re-calling in and amending all fireram certs, you could take the 2 species of deer allowed(Muntjac & Chinese Water deer)?

Then have your cert rectified on the next renewal.

There was a topic on here about it at the time.I seem to recall it was a grey area then also, although i never followed it closely as i have deer on my cert already.

Yes there was a new piece of legislation set up in which anyone with a .223 on their FAC for fox, COULD use it for deer. But this was done so that people with deer calibre rifles such as .308, .243, 6.5 Swede etc could now use their fox rifle to shoot deer, without having to sent in their FAC to have the conditions changed until their next renewal. This was in effect to save the police the inconvenience of all the extra work that would have been involved.

It goes without saying that if you have never had “Deer†on your ticket before this legislation, then it won’t apply to you, otherwise any Tom, **** or Harry could simply go off a shoot a deer with their .22 CF without having first got the necessary permission to do so.

You must have “Deer†entered onto your ticket for a currently owned rifle before you can use a .22CF rifle on deer.

unless you've got your Meat Hygene Certificate and Tags

WHEN YOU TAKE ANY DEER TO THE BUTCHERS YOU WILL HAVE TO SUPPLY THE RED PLUCK WITH IT FOR EXAMINATION
