Beardo
questions for the techies - would a magnet speed controller work as a lamp dimmer? not going to try it (got a dimmer anyway), but seeing this post got me thinking
Pipmoff
Not tried these ones but I have a couple of the Magtame ones along with the intermittent timers and they are very good.

Warlock
Same basic principal, restricts the ammount of current reaching the motor/bulb.
Cosd
questions for the techies - would a magnet speed controller work as a lamp dimmer?not going to try it (got a dimmer anyway), but seeing this post got me thinking Hey Mr beardo, Why not pop down to a scrap yard and get yourself a dimmer switch from any car? Probably charge you next to nothing for one! If you can't get your hands on one let me know and I'll get a mate of mine to grab one for you. Agent36
Hi, I have converted one of my speed controllers for lamp dimming. Someone wanted a batch making that would handle 100 watts. The solution was simple add a larger heat sink to the mosfet to disipate the heat quicker. 100 watts at 12 volts is about 8amps. Any Pulse width modulation circuit will work as a dimmer. This type of control switches the 12volts on and off very quickly many times a second. The load e.g lamp or motor will see an average voltage. regards Agent36 Edit; The above is the most efficent way of controlling the load, very little energy (battery power) is wasted as heat, when compared to large resistor packs found in car electrics. A word of caution, I bought one of these little black gizmos from this guy and it burnt out in 5 minutes. It came without instructions and no contact phone number either..........
