a friend of mine (this is true its not me) has just bought a new shotgun and he took it to a wood on the farm he lives on to try it out on some roosting crows and pigeons.

91 shots for one pigeon and a squirrel, thats about six pounds of lead :sly: ive had some fairly ordinary days but would not admit to this.

the squirrel was static

I started a similar thread due to a recent outing where I managed only 3 birds for 30 shots the other week. Well I was back out on a freshly drilled bean field on Saturday and managed 36 birds for 77 shots, so I'm back in the swing.

I figure that when pigeon shooting I can be pretty happy with a ratio of about 2 shots per bird as the shooting can be pretty testing at times. But there are so many variables to a day that can mean one day is full of 'easy' shots and another day only fast crossers so there are no hard and fast rules.

What do others consider a good ratio of shots to birds in the bag?

44 birds for 150shells me and a mate mind you he only shot ten birds. still quite funny ripping the **** out of each other. we where working on a theory of scaring the birds away before shooting.just to keep defra happy.

couldnt hit the ones coming into the deeks much but the hard birds i was picking up really well.impresed meself on times.oh well you win some you loose some.better luck next time

Anything better than 50% is considered by most to be a good average, but it depends how they are shot.

If you are flight shooting in a howling gale then 1 in 3 might be good, however if you are shooting over deeks, AND YOU HAVE PLACED THE DECOY PATTERN CORRECTLY RELATIVE TO THE WIND, (very important..!!), then you should average 60 - 70% if you are a half decent shot.

Another factor is the time of year, (believe it or not), as in September / October time if you are shooting over stubbles you will get a lot of young first year birds that generally present easier shots and are easier to kill than a fully grown adult pigeon..!!

My average on Sporting Clays is 82 - 84%, so I find them generally a tad easier than woodies..!!!
