Help with chosing a scope for 10/22 semi, I'm a bit clueless

Hello all,

Normally I read through these forums and find my answers without having to ask any questions but I'm a bit stuck and need some help.

I've just got myself a new ruger 10/22 semi-auto and I need to get myself a scope. I don't want to spend a lot of money on it as I am planning, in the near future, to get myself a .308 and scope. This rifle will mainly be used at the range up to about 100 yards for target shooting.

The thing is that I don't have a clue about which scope to go for. I've spoken to a few dealers but as usual I get conflicting advice.

I think what I want is either a 3-9 or a 3-12 x either 40 or 50, would that be about right?

What sort of money should I be spending? One fella offered me a bushnell trophy but he wanted £120 plus £20 for the mounts, yet another guy offered me an ags 3-90x40 mildot with mounts and fitted for £70.

My main problem with deciding what to buy is trying to work out if it is for an air rifle or a rimfire, or is there any difference? I have been looking about a bit on ebay trying to pick up a cheap bargain but most people don't say what they used it for.

I was looking at this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ags-scopes_W0QQitemZ...%3A1|240%3A1318

or this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AGS-Rifle-Scope-Sapp...%3A1|240%3A1318

I was offered a tasco scope cheap enough, yet I have a read a few reviews saying that they are nothing more than toys. Can anyone suggest something that might be worthwhile or is £70 for scope, mounts and fitting about the best price I can get. I hadn't even heard of ags until today.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated, I just don't have a clue and it's quite hard to find idiots guides to this stuff as most people know what's what.

Thanks

I have a Tasco world Class on my 10/22 and it's an awesome combination. Forget the "I've been told" syndrome. Basically any reasonable airgun scope will work well on a rimfire. I've used a Bushnell Sportsman, Tasco Varmint, tasco world class and BSA Contender on mine, all to good effect.

Hawke, Simmons, AGS and MTC need a mention as well. Don't get sucked in to the "you need a quality scope on your rimfire" brigade. You don't.

And before the flamers start, I have a Simmons WTC on my hmr, a Meopta on my .243 and a Swaro on my .223 so I do have a balanced viewpoint.

Personally i think you couldnt go wrong with a 3.5-10x40 simmons wtc. Ive never needed anymore mag than this for any of my hunting needs. I have had a wtc on my 1022 for the past two years. It does everything i need and is a good low light scope. I also prefer scopes that arnt parallex adjustable as for me just gets in the way especially when lamping .

The ags range of scopes and tasco's are also perfectly adequate and pretty cheap. Most of the cheaper named brands will be fine on the 1022 as there is only negligable recoil.

At the moment i have a simmons wtc 3.5-10x40 non p/a on my 1022, a simmons wtc 6.5-20x50 p/a on my .223 ,a smk 4-9x40 non p/a (very much like an ags copy ) and a cheap and cheerfull non p/a 4x40 simmons on my qb78

Thanks for the replies.

I was out looking at a few yesterday, went to a different dealer who offered me a Hawke Sport HD 3-9x40 for £60 or a bushnell trophy 3-9x40 for £100. I actually preferred the Hawke I think but I'm wondering if there is anything for the same price that would be better value.

I have done a bit more reading through the posts on here and I see a lot of people talking about JSR, are they any good?

They have a 3-9x40 px illuminated for £49.95

Would the Hawke be a better buy? Or should I spend a bit more money and get a Hawke scope from one of the more expensive ranges? There is a lot of chat about the Hawke nite-eye

i use a zos 3-9 on mine, cost £32 on ebay; theyre a chinese make BUT before i get the usual remarks ive had a couple of them, zos make the scopes for the chinese army so theyre a good bit of kit, cheap too, and works very well on a 10/22; only downside is if anything does go wrong you gotta try to send it back, but for £32 i wouldnt be too worried
