raistrick
This may sound a little unnecessary, but I figured if its cheap it would be useful. I have to keep my shotgun at a club and don't have a locker at home (and can't). To save me from spending hours at a shooting ground or in a quiet room somewhere near where my gun is locked up, I was wondering how easy it would be to get hold of a deactivated basic over under (or even a plastic immitation) which I could practice my gun mount on, perhaps with one of those laser contraptions. I think the repitition is a major thing for me that I don't get time enough to practice and I'd like to find a way to practice this before bed each day. Is it realistic to do this? How much would it cost and where from? Are there any issues with doing this?

Otherwise there would be issues with different: weight, balance, action height etc You'd probably be better off visualising your gun mount mentally cheaper too! The long term solution is to get a gun safe sorted..... You have any mates with a gunsafe? May be able to store it with them? In a couple of years i'll have my own place, but it wouldn't be ethical to have one anywhere near where I live True, it would be best if it was the same as my gun, but not sure that a different one would be completely pointless, would it? So long as I got the stock set up to be the same length and height? Have been trying to do it mentally though! Would be nice to have something to hold of reasonable weight and feel what it's like to do the motion, where the balance should be on the feet, etc.

Warlock
I`m interested as to why it wouldn`t be "ethical" to store it where you live?
throdgrain
Indeed, what is ethical about keeping a shotgun ?
T.C.
I do not think you are likely to find a cheap deactivated shotgun , so your plan is not realistic . How about plan B : shoot gun up until you can keep your gun at home. When you do get to keep your gun at home try and get a look at one of Gil Ash's videos on dry mounting. http://www.ospschool.com/index.html Edited March 23, 2009 by T.C. How about plan B : shoot gun up until you can keep your gun at home. Haha, sounds drastic. I can shoot gun down now, just want to improve faster. Really was just curious about deactivated guns! I'm not gonna go into why I can't store it at my place. Lets just go with: I don't own my place and the person who does would never agree to it. Perhaps "ethical" wasn't the best choice of words, but it sure as hell wouldn't be a good idea. I don't need to tell anyone here how uncomfortable people get when the word "gun" is used. Another reason for wanting a deactivated shotgun. As a club we were thinking of getting a deactivated gun that we could allow beginners to borrow to practice their gun mount without needing a license. Or for using on a simulator if we can get a grant for one.
Mungler
Errr.... Anyhows, you could get a blank stock set off ebay - there are plenty of Yanks who are into their woodwork. You could then make a dummy gun up. Alternatively, you could get one of >these< if you save up enough pocket money
Chard
I always think deactivated shotguns are ridiculously expensive, considering that they have no practical use. They're actually more expensive than if they hadn't been deactivated I went to some military show in Kent a few years back and there was a stand selling deacts. They had some battered old Remi pump that they were trying to say was Vietnam vintage - yeah right and they wanted £250 for it :( . The stand was full of spotty yoofs and assorted misfits who would never be granted a SGC and money was changing hands The Remi was quite popular with the yoofs as it was old style deact and it still cranked. They were all practicing their Rambo pose, cranking it with with one hand. "Gooks in the wire"

If he is as strange as you are implying, wouldn't your Amish commune leader freak out about a deactivated gun too? Edited to add: it's not Gordon R is it? It was probably a pointless musing, just thought I'd get people's opinions. (If anyone really wants to know about my personal situation they're welcome to email me, I'm just not plastering it on the web if you don't mind - and I'm ignostic, so not amish )
clayman
You need to practice with the gun you use, unless the "de-activated" one has the same measures as your shooting one there will not be a lot of advantage gained. Use an ArrowLaserShot pointer in your actual gun - really good for checking your quality of swing and mount.
