ironhorse
While out shooting today my mate and I bumped into the keeper, during our intellectual banter to and fro our discussion reached cartridges, cardboard cartridges. The keeper said in his high class vocabulary, dun um smell good. We having used cardboard cartridges during the early 1970s before plastic was widely used agreed that a spent cardboard cartridge has a smell like no other, and during the 70s we could be found ridding our local farmer of his pigeon problem, while wearing a spent cardboard cartridge up one nostril. The keeper agreed that yes after emptying a cardboard cartridge that was indeed the place store the empty. My question is are we the only ones to partake of this fix or are all shooters hooked once smelled.
turbo33
Thank god Ironhorse,I thought I was the only one!! When I was a kid, I used to listen for the sound of gunshot on nearby fields and like a springer, had a nose for finding the recentley spent shell, as you say verticly up each nostril, heaven. Only one aroma comes anywhere near that and that is the smell of the varnish on the case before being fired. The technique for which was to roll it horizontaly under the nose like a havana cigar, remember that one?!!!! Happy days. anser2
Its not so much the smell of spent cartridges i remember as a kid , it was the smell of a newly opened box of paper case Eley Gran Prix or Impax. And the smell of the over cork wads . Modern shells just do not do it for me anymore  Edited March 26, 2009 by anser2

fieldwanderer
Too young to remember really, though I was given 50 cardboard cartridges last summer loaded with 35g no6 and blackpowder but they stank! I love the smell of eley match .22s though, dunno what they put in them but it's not the same as other .22s.
