HI,

IM A NOVICE AIRGUNNER AND NEED SOME ADVICE REGARDING MY RIFLE.

I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE IN SERVICING AIR GUNS SO KEEP IT SIMPLE....

I HAVE A WEIHRAUCH HW90 WITH THE THEOBEN GAS RAM. I HAVE NOTICED THAT IF I HAVE NOT USED IT FOR A WHILE AND COME BACK TO IT, THE POWER HAS DROPPED.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT MIGHT BE CAUSING THIS TO HAPPEN AND IF IT WILL COST ME AN ARM AND A LEG TO REPAIR. (I HAVE JUST REPLACED THE BARREL AT £200 SO I DONT WANT TO BIN IT !! )

THANKS IN ADVANCE

hello mate,

i think the only way to really tell wether its lost any power is to use a chronograph. as has been said before, the ram is the only power source. so if anything is faulty its likely to be that. or a seal. i wouldn't try an service it yourself if i was you,

as for paying £200 for a new barrel, as you said we all live and learn but i would definately not go to who ever sold that to you again. a good gun shop should of given you some advice and not just took your money.

Theoben sell a pump kit for their rifles (which may work on your gas ram) for adjusting the power and it costs less than the figures you have mentioned. Have a look on their website. They also sell replacement gas rams.

Have you used anything strange to clean the barrel? Oil or something similar? If so, don't. I just use pellet lube on mine and have been recommended not to use oil meant for power burning weapons. Oil build up will cause a power drop.

The HW90 is a great gun and once you get it sorted it will last you a long time so don't worry too much about the £200 for the barrel and whatever it costs to sort the ram. If you don't fix it the value will be next to nothing anyway for a trade in, whereas when sorted it should have a good value and you can keep and use it. Just be careful not to ripped off again by that gun shop!

The HW90 barrels from Hull Cartridge are actually around £200 at the moment, so you have not been ripped off. I enquired about changing to .177 a few weeks ago but was put off by the price.

The repair cost by Hull cartridge can also easily be in excess of £100. My rifle about 5 years ago cost £135 when it needed to go back with problems with the ram.

The cost to fix these gas ram rifles varies dramtically depending upon the age of the rifles.

The reason why the cost is so much is probably because of the constant pumping the ram then chronoing, then pumping a bit more and chronoing until you get an acceptable output. Then leaving it on test to ensure that there is no leak.

Last year I had my 90 ram regassed and it cost £25, it was nearer £85 if I wanted the full seal kit done and a full overhaul.

If I were you I would get it chronoed to check the power first.

Thanks for the advice guys

I think any problem with it is going to be seals so I will get it chrono'd and watch for any power drop over a few weeks. I have my own pump so i can do my own adjustments.

If it costs me £80 to get it sorted its cheaper than getting a new one and like you say it will have a trade in value if I decide to get rid in the future

( I'm wanting an AA 410 FAC EXTRA when my FAC eventually arrives)

happy hunting !

I thought you already had an FAC. You said in an earlier post that you had an FAC HW90, or is this how you broke the ram :good:

I'd follow Bruno22rf advice,

If its the ram thats gone, you may as well buy new...

I have one of these till recently - long barrel version, at 12ft lb was accrate as hell, cut barrel down and put a HW silencer on and it lost its accuracy over night. So i sold it....wish i hadn't touched it at all now, and would have another - but like the others have said i'd buy a new one -

another point is that the rams in these can be decieving as they need to be fired once or twice to get their zero back if they are left (uncocked) - also if you have a good one (like i did before playing with it) they are reasonsably quiet too - which can be also decieving....another point is that it could be the valve that is leaking at the rerar of the cylinder - if you look at the back of the cylinder there are two 'bolt' heads that are proud, the larger is the access to the valve for filling etc.

If you'd like a schematic for a HW90 Pm me your email addy and i'll dig it out,

Tom

The rams wont break on these HW90's if you up the power, the Webley trigger system has be designed and specifically made to break above 16 ft Ib mark - a failsaft HW installed.

The rams are the same they use in the Evolution/fenman/other HW FAC guns - they are good up to 35ft Ib.
