chewy0013
Hi everyone and thanks for all the advice about my rifle selection. I have decided to get the hw97k (.177) rather than the pro sport due to the fact that they are a hell of a lot more money for not a huge amount more rifle. After reading through this site and other forums I have decided that I would like to tune the rifle.(I studied engineering for a while at uni so I'm able do most of the work myself.) What I would like to know is what should I do to it? At the moment I am thinking that I will fit a v-mach kit, add a PTFE Washer, a better breach seal and a GRT III Trigger. What do people think of that as a tune? I'm not trying to increase the power. I just want it as quiet, smooth and accurate I can make it! bruno22rf
Good luck with the tuning-if done properly then the 97k would be nearer the prosports build quality.I would spend a little more initially and go for the Air Arms-much as ive been a weirauch fan all my life i dont think that they are a match for the AA products.I worked as a precision engineer for near 30 years and have used and sold most of the German guns in that time-whereas both AA guns i have bought are still in my cabinet and i wouldnt part with them. chewy0013
Thats for the reply Bruno. What do you think...Increase my budget, get the pro sport and give that a tune? (I could prob get one for an extra £70) My biggest requirement is the noise, I know that everyone will tell me to get a pcp or a co2 but I like to have a small amount of recoil, I dont want the hassle of having to get air in it or buying co2 capsules and I like to be able to strip it down to bare bones and put it back together again. Do you think that a tuned pro sport with a silencer will be quieter than the hw97k? What are the TX200 like? Stuart
Westcountryman
My personal opinion is that the HW rifles are better built than the AA springers. However, the air arms out of the box are a bit nicer to shoot. They are a bit smoother which makes them abit quieter. When you tune an HW, just fit a new main spring, washer, top hat, spring guide and piston sleeve, you end up with a better rifle than a standard AA. Financially speaking, there isn't much in it, once you have bought the tuning kit, but imo, the end result is a better rifle. Its worth bearing in mind that the fit of the rifle is also important and should not be ignored. I am not keen on the cocking leaver on the pro sport and prefer the TX200/HW smooth and round cocking leavers although the pro sport is a lovely looking rifle. There is a guy that will do the equivalent of a full laza (something Venom used to do) for what I believe to be a reasonable price. This includes adding delrin buttons the the piston, making the firing cycle pretty damn smooth. TX 200s are nice rifles, but IMO, not as nice as the HW equivalent. Again, if you want to tune, HWs are the way ahead. The noise of a springer comes from the action, until thats silent, you won't get the benefit of adding silencers. The Pro sport iirc, has a shrouded barrel, as does the TX200 HC which keeps things nice and tidy, I wouldn't add another silencer to a pro sport as that will ruin its looks for little gain. bruno22rf
like westcountryman indicates-ita a matter of personal choice-i stand by the fact that if i could only have one gun for the rest of my life at the price range of these 2-i would go for the Air Arms everytime-before you buy can you not try a few different guns at a local club or shop-i think that for the price you are looking at you are so near to a PCP that if you try ,say, an S200 you will want one enough to spend a bit more-or you could buy a used one and then get a tank from fleabay for about £60.Once you have shot a PCP i think you will quickly realise that these are popular for a good reason. chewy0013
Thank you everyone for all the advice so far. It still amazes me the willingness to help fellow shooters out within the community. Terrier, thanks for the post. My German friend is translating it as we speak!! Any other advice still more than welcome. Has anyone heard of fitting a gas ram to a HW97K? Someone said that they don't fit, but I'm sure I can modify the rifle if someone can show me how!
