What exactly is 'gun fit'

Being new to clay shooting and very soon on the look out for my first gun. I have had it drummed into me....FIT!

So, where exactly should it be fitting me? Some of the guns I have shot so far felt more comfortable than others but what are the areas where it needs to fit to ensure a better shot?

Are sporting guns with an adjustable stock a worthwhile investment for a new shooter or are they just for fine tuning?

Guns ive got me eye on are Browning Ultra XS, Baretta 682 Gold E and maybe the Baretta Parennia 30"

the areas you should look for the gun to be the correct sizes (fit) are

1. length of stock

2. comb height

3. cast

4. drop to the heel

really its the gun being the right size and shape to fit you and the way you mount it rather than having to alter your natural shape to accommodate a gun that is the wrong size and shape, if you buy your gun from a reputable smith he will fit it for you

if you search on the forum, there are some very helpful threads talking about gun fit.

I only started shooting last 1/4 of last year. I thought that I was an average type of build etc, so hoped an "off the peg" average gun would fit. after spending some time with a gunsmith - to be told I have a long neck, shorter arms for my size, but big'ish hands - the advice he gave me has been invaluable. only wish I'd spoken to him before I'd bought my 1st gun, which I subsequently traded for an adj. browning Ultra XS.

if you can afford it, an adj stock is a good idea as it gives you so many more options for gun fit.

my advice, spend some time with a good coach/or gun smith..... will save you money in the long run.

I can certainly recommend http://www.greenwoodgunsmiths.co.uk/ - I am in no way related.... just found the advice very useful, & I went there looking to have my gun made to fit, which would have made the gunsmith more money than the actual advice he gave...

good luck

Comb raisers and butt pads can change the dimetntions of any stick very cheaply. Its worth noting that your positision, including feet placement and how you hold your upper body will change the way you hold your gun as much as cutting your arms off. A 17" stock will be too short if you hold your gun the same way you would a rifle.

Come and see us at the East Anglian Game Fair 25-26th April, and we will show you what it means.

Abacus Claysports - find our stand in the show.

Hi, Jaycey,

Sounds like an offer you can't refuse.

By the way, Clayman, thanks. You're dead right, it was down to me, I misread, thought you were giving bore sizes!
