Lanks
Just started shooting again (10 years out) and have a Hatsan Escort 28'' syn. 12g I am using 6 1/2 30g Eley's which seem pretty good. I went out for our first decoy shoot which was good I shot all the birds dropping but missed the higher (in range) left to right birds? I may not be giving them enough lead or too much? I am using the 4 cut 'imp cyl' which I think is the 1/4 choke (those with escorts may be able to shed more light on the subject), maybe a little tight as the kill zone is 30 yards? What I am after is advice on chokes for the escort and advice on general lead on left to right birds both comming in and leaving! Cheers
shottyscotty
i had the same problem and i was using moderate, witch is half choke i think so i switch to using 1/4 choke and started hitting more and only use cylinder on rabbits. i use eley 6.5 real tree in 30 gram and only give about 4 foot of lead on crossers and seem to hit a good few. cylinder is open improved cylinder is 1/4 moderate is 1/2 improvedmoderate is 3/4 and ful is just full it says in your manual about the percentages of shot hitting at 35 yards and i worked it out from there
Lanks
So we have the same set up then Scotty, maybe I should stick with the 1/4 then for another go and just give a little more lead, I did feel I was a little behind. Thanks for double checking the chokes for me too. Good to get on the forum and find more out.
wymberley
Hi, Lanks, Choke is fine provided that is what the gun is actually shooting. If you're consistantly missing left to right, check your dominant eye, particularly if you're a right-handed shooter. PS, typed this twice, screen threw up "error" so anything could happen! Markio
i had the same problem and i was using moderate, witch is half choke It's modified, not moderate. Could get confusing... And to the OP, yes 4 notches = 1/4, 3 = 1/2 and so on. I must admit i struggle with pigeons more often that not so i'll can't help there. Lanks
Thanks guys, Yes right handed, shoot well with my rifles. (try not to be big headed) I think it was the lead, I was only giving them a small lead as I pulled through them, will try it. Yeh the escort different way of marking is something I wanted to double check. Made a couple of bobbing decoys today with old hacksaw blades (sprayed mat black!) put them in the garden and they look pretty good, so maybe out later to have a go. wymberley
Hi, Lanks, lead or the lack of it, is what I'm on about particularly for a right-handed shooter missing left to right. Did you check your dominant eye? Ability with a rifle doesn't enter into it.
utectok
bit of practise or better still a lesson on the clay range and you will find the crossers easier than any of the others I struggle with long going away birds now!
deny essex
one common fault after a long period shooting rifles is to stop the gun swing as you squeeze the trigger, someone watching you as you mount swing and fire maybe able to help if that is a problem. Lanks
Deny, I think that was the problem.
wymberley
Hi, Good news,Lanks. I'm pleased that what I thought the problem might be wasn't. The wrong eye dominant is a right pain in the rear. Good shooting, cheers.
