hurstpol
One of the best knives I ever had was made from a hacksaw blade, the large type about 2" wide the heavy ones that fit in the big electrical ones on a stand type hack saws. scotttomo
What sort of thickness of steel are you after to make the blade? I could send some hardened steel to you for nowt if you need it? Or even some regular 316 stainless which will be easier to work with then harden after you've shaped the blade? PM me if you want some, just let me know the dimensions of the piece you'll need and bobs your uncle
Windy
not sure about knives, but at uni we had to make mini planes in the first year for the metal work module. I remember when making the plane blade, heating it to straw yellow was the important bit.
DanRM
Sorry to bring up old posts, but halfway through making my second knife today, i accidentaly broke the tang to about an inch from where the blade starts. After the work i have done to it (grinding the depth of a file down) i dont fancy throwing it and as the blade is already only 3" i cant reduce that into the tang any more. I dont think that it would have the strength to keep it as a fixed blade knife though After looking at a pocket knife i noticed that the tang is quite short, and i thought i might be able to turn it into one that folds, but cant find a way or any info on how to do this Anyone able to help? Cheers Dan
Nial
Sorry to bring up old posts, but halfway through making my second knife today, i accidentaly broke the tang to about an inch from where the blade starts. Can you not get it welded, if properly done this should be plenty strong enough. Nial
