I was once told a story about white pheasants.

A local keeper used to put down white pheasants as a bit of a money spinner, and he used to pin the story that you where not to shoot a white pheasants, as it was his daughters pet, and a beloved one if that, and if you did shoot the white pheasant, you'd be fined £100 - This was rubbish of course, he just put them down to charge anyone short sited enough to shoot at them .

One faithful shoot day, a Gun came up to the keeper, and admitted he was pretty sure he'd shot the white pheasant, and handed over £100, when the walked over the peg to get the bird, there layed out was 5 white pheasants.

In the end, he wasn't charged for those birds, and ended up getting 5 pheasants for £100 - not bad really.

White pheasants have been used as population indicators, poachers would take a white pheasant over a common chinese ringneck any day so if the keeper stopped seeing the white ones about he knew that poaching was taking place. One reason why a fine was brought in, have to rear another batch of white pheasants next year, same reason why people are sometimes fined for shooting guinea fowl on some shoots.

we have white ones on our shoot to use as bird markers so we can roughly guess when we see a white one we know there are other birds in the immediate area. the guns get charged £25 for shooting one but it all goes to a cancer fund at the end of the season

ps. nice setups
