Wriggler
I take it the over barrel is the one I want to fire first and have the wider choke in
J@mes
depends what shot you are taking....
Blunderbuss
Normally the bottom barrel first with wider choke.
libs
Depends on the target. Thats why I am a fan of the double trigger!
Tobyb525
Actually it tends to be the under barrel first with the wider choke in. Not shure it makes much difference though! I heard the idea is that if you were shooting game, say pigeon, if you miss it with your first shot and it flies away from you, you will have a tighter choke in the next barrel as it gets further away from you. Blunderbuss
With a double trigger or a barrel selector on the safety, you can obviously choose which barrel to fire first. However if its a fixed choke, chances are the bottom barrel will be the more open - for closer birds and a tighter choke on top. With a multi choke and barrel selector or double trigger all options are open for you to set it up however you like. Devilishdave
If driven shooting fire the tight choke first if you miss then take it with the open choke as it gets closer. If walked up use open choke first as chances aree it will be going away and tighter choke for follow up shot to reach out that bit further. You should use the under barrel first as it is more in line with the stock and will cause less muzzle flip and thus you will get on to the second target slightly quicker but it makes little differance. Pigeons being very mobile will tend to be going away from you after the first shot so same as awalked up. This is not set in ston some times driven shooting you will be shooting behind and efectively shooting going away. some times walked up a bird will fly towards you and over you but more the exception than the rule. mark1187
Dave just pipped me! My two-penneth: Bottom barrel gives a better axis line onto the shoulder, making acquisition of second shot easier. If shooting “walked up†I follow convention and use the bottom barrel/wider choke first. For a driven target I would use the top barrel/tighter choke first leaving the more open choke for the second closer shot, even though that contradicts my first point! When shooting a flush or in a hide, it is quicker to load the top barrel if you have only fired one shot, also you need less barrel drop to get the cartridge in. beatingisbest
If the barrel isnt in the right place it doesnt matter, it'll be a miss either barrel you fire first.
mark1187
Agreed! This is why most of the time I shoot a single barrel - Then I can say I had the wrong choke if I miss ;O)
