Horrocks
As a very brief substitute for oil to get rid of moisture on the barrel in the cabinet, is Wd40 an alternative, applied sparingly with a cloth, or would it damage the blueing? libs
Its all we use to clean the guns out at work, does a good job as a solvent and an oil, but still no match for a real gun cleaning kit.
Gordon R
Used it for 30 years - no problem.

clayman
WD stands for Water Dispersant Thats what it was made for. Its a light oil ( basically 32 sec heating oil) and it acts well as a water chaser, and a light lubricant - BUT - as a light lube it does disolve away heavier gun oils and greases in the action and moving/wearing parts. So, if you use WD to lubricate you will find the gun becomes Addicted to it, ie you need to constantly replace it as the WD does not last long, and dries out in use and heat conditions. A WD gun is dry after about 50 shots in the ejectors, while a gun oil gun is good for 200 before it needs replacing. If the WD gets into the inner action and washes out the proper gun oils, wear may occur prematurely. By all means use it for what its made for, wipe your barrels down with it to keep rust away - but keep it away from the action.
RC45
I always wipe the barrels down with WD40, it gets rid of the finger marks and stops corrosion.
