Yazzy
I am going to be using a friends gun at the weekend to shoot clays. Its a Sabatti 20 bore over and under, the last time I used a 12 bore I found the kickback to hard. What is the best type of cartridge to use as I understand they come in different power? Also do I need to show my license at the shooting place before they will sell me cartridges? As you can guess I am very new to this sport. So friendly advise preferred. John_R
You'll be asked to show your SGC before they can sell you carts, though when I first started shooting clays I had no SGC, there are circumstances at clubs where this is OK. Try 24 gram loads, they suit a 20 gauge well, and if that is too much you can get 21 gram. Having said that, getting bashed around by recoil gets better as you learn how to mount, and also gun fit makes a huge difference,
Cranfield
We regularly shoot 21gram and 24 gram cartridges from 12 bores on clays, they are a very comfortable and effective load. Often harsh recoil is felt if a gun does not fit you very well, its worth someone having a look at it for you, also you might consider a recoil pad. ryantidgwell
at my clay ground they never ask for a sgc for carts or to borrow a gun i often use 28 gram loads but think i will cut down to a 21 gram tommorrow and give them a whirl
Windy
if the ground you go to has a sec11, no need for sgc.
Yazzy
Hi Guys Thanks for all your replies. I went out shooting yesterday using 21gm cartridges and the kick back was less but I still have bruises on my shoulder and at the very top of my arm. The gun feels more comfortable then when I was using my buddies and I expect I just need to get used to it and get some strength in my upper arms as I found I struggled to unload it and catch the empty shells! Perseverance is needed I suppose.
John_R
Get some proper lessons if you have not already, as without good gun fit and good mount it is hard to deal with recoil let alone shoot straight.
Yazzy
I managed to hit approximate 50% of the clays which is loads better then my first attempt when I hit 3 from 25 My buddy and I had discussed taking some lessons and the place we shoot at offers it at a reasonable costs so that is next on the cards.
