SNAKEBITE
Bagged me my first squirrel yesterday!! There I was sitting waiting for the rabbits and this squirrel came down in front of me and started foraging. I wasn't able to get a bead on it without spooking it so I watched as it hopped out of view and up a tree out of sight. About 5 minutes later I caught a glimpse of it on a brach looking at me. Slowly lifting the rifle up I got it in my sights. It was crouched on a branch looking down at me so It was a "from the front head shot". I fired it waent star shaped and thudded to the floor. I have read that you have to be careful picking them up incase they have you so I went over and checked it was dead. It was a tough old critter and unfortuantly I had to deliver a "mercy shot" to finish it off. (Too be fair I was sure it was dead but incase it wasn't just a reflex action I wanted to make sure, better safe than sorry). Anyway with it dressed and oven ready I put some orange and crannberry stuffing in the cavity and glazed the outside with a honey and corriander sauce. In the oven and turned and glazed every 10 minutes, served with vegetables and rost potatoes. Perfect. Any other recipie ideas?

Paul in North Lincs.
Caws......Oh yes.. the squirrel is quite delicacey. Look in the reciepy forum and I thinks there are a few ideas in there. You need a few though for a good feed. Snakebite......For some strange reason the squirrel is a very 'hard hit'. Its a robust and bony little creature, and only a well executed shot wil muller them outright. One of my dogs have been bitten badle by a grey it was retireveing, so yes,... be cautious when picking up!! Paul in North Lincs
