Harnser
Had a drive around the farms today and found a couple of winter sown barley fields almost at the milky stage . Another few days at the most and the pigeons will want to have ago . A bit of advice for the novice shooters who have not shot growing cereals before . Wait untill part of the crop is laid by the wind or rain before having a go . your farmer is not going to be happy to see you tramping through the corn if it is not laid . If its not laid then the pigeons wont be able to do any damage to it . If it is laid then set up with some coys or magnet on a laid piece of the field ,i allways prefer along side a hedgerow if possible . If the laid piece is further out then you should be able to set up a small net hide in the tramlines . Dont put to many coys out on the laid piece as this will deter the birds coming in ,they like a bit room to land . I allways put my coys in a random pattern into the wind at the far side of the killing area leaving room to drop the birds on the laid bit . All ways try and shoot the birds over the laid piece of barley ,it does take a bit of dicipline to do this but is worth it as you will pick up more birds . Any birds that carnt be marked down then leave ,dont go tramping around in the corn . A dog can do just as much damage running around in the corn as you can so leave him at home . Good hunting . starlight32
The pigeon are definately back in town, fair bit of milky barley round my way and watched some big flocks bounce between the barley/peas and spring rape. Fair bit of damage to the spring rape I have seen, and as of tommorrow I intend to spoil the party.

Harnser
Stoopid question but how do you know when it is milky? Just squeeze a head of barley through your fingers and if its milky it will be soft and wet and milky . Harnser.
