Age of firearms certificate

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

my nephew is a keen shot and wishes to acquire his own .22 rimfire rifle for the pesky rabbits on their farm, of course he needs a firearms licensee for this but i was wondering what the law was on him actually owning the rifle, obviously he cannot buy it himself? But is it legal for him to have the rifle bought for him and have it on his certificate under his name and as his possession? He is 15 nearly 16 by the way.

thanks you for your help guys,

I've just turned 14 a few days ago, i recently rang the firearms licensing and have been told that i can apply for a FAC (and if granted) i can have a .22LR put on it, providing my dad or somebody we knew well would buy the gun and ammo; Once they have been brought and put on there certificate they can be given to me directly.

This seems stupid as i could in theory be given a 10 shot auto but not a sbs shotgun

Under 14 :- You may not use a section 1 firearm except for target shooting as a member of a Home Office approved rifle club.

Age 14 to 17 :- At the age of 14 you may be granted a firearms certificate and be given firearms & ammunition in accordance with the conditions specified on the certificate.

Over 17 :- You may buy a firearm & ammunition in accordance with the conditions set out on your certificate.

Wicked, looks like he'll be shooting in no time, how long on average do you expect a firearms certificate to take?? and what do they look for? I have a shotgun cert myself but not an FAC is it relatively the same process??

thanks a bunch everyone
