digger
i havent shot anything larger than a .22 for a few years and am considering getting a rifle for fox control.i last used a .270 many years ago and whilst i am sure the calibres havent changed all that much when i look in shooting times etc i am bewildered by the choice. mannlicher do a range of guns that they advertise as "factory threaded",does this mean to accept a moderator ? i dont intend to shoot anything larger than foxes,at no more than 100 yards. thanks in advance gents. Hodmedod.one
If you only need the rifle for foxes, the Plods will probably try to restrict you to one of the centrefire .22s. If you are lucky, they may let you have a .243. A mate of mine has a 22-250 and that does the business on foxes. The round has a very flat trajectory and is quick. Yes "factory threaded" does mean that the barrel is pre-threaded to accept a moderator. This is good news, cos whenever a rifle is purchased unthreaded and then modified, it needs to be sent away for re-proofing. I just paid £95 +VAT to get one of mine done. Mannlichers are great rifles. I have a Steyr Mannlicher SSG 69 Match in .243 and love it. Just in case you don't know, if it says "varmint barrel" in the advert, these are much heavier versions than standard barrels. They also tend to be a bit longer. This makes for good accuracy, but you need to eat your weetabix if you are planning on carrying one around all day! Hope this is of some help....I'm sure that you will get many more replies. verminator
What sort of accuracy are you getting with the SSG? Im after a .243.
Frank
Hello Diger A .22 Hornet is good up to 100 yds. I had one for years, could not fault it. I now have a .204 and love it. CZ Brno do a good model in .22 Hornet and they are cheap, but good Check this web site out if you are thinking of getting a .204. www.204ruger.com The .204 reaches out to 300yds, but as you have said, you only want to shoot to a 100, so i think the Hornet should suit your needs Edited May 1, 2005 by Frank
dunganick
hornet is good for 170ish yards on a fox, and good for bunnies as far as you can hit them it is a round that really wants to be reloaded, as you dont get amazing groups out of factory in my experiance, for this reason i would recomend a 222 or 223, its so nearly the same as the 204, apart from almost every rifle is made in the round, where as there is only a select few that make 204's 222 and 223 will be fine for what you want
rjimmer
What sort of accuracy are you getting with the SSG? Im after a .243. My SSG in .308 will do 1" groups at 200 yrds with Norma 180grn Factory ammo. Mine has a double set trigger, but some don't! That was from a foxhole on the range. Don't know what it would do from a bench! I haven't got round to reloading much since I found Samson factory loads.
